Just Curious But I have never really seen the point in carrying 3 knives around, no offense to those who do. I just think in my view carrying 1 really good knife around is better than 3 or 4. I know most of you carry all the knives around to do different tasks, but couldn't one good knife get it done. Anyway could someone tell me why and whats the point in carrying 3 knifes around.

I am not trying to say it is overkill to carry that many blades just so no one takes offense.

I carry around my Buck Strider 880tx everywhere (except work I have a separate knife for that) and the Buck Strider seems to get everything done

There have been a few threads like this one but I'll give you my take. I am a knife guy, a knife nut. Not only that I do diff jobs throughout the day as well. I usuall carry 1-3 knives and a mulitool. I really probably only need the multitool. But I like my knives so many times I'll carry a fully serrated para-mili, a sebbie and a LT Charge. However another reason I carry multiple knives is because I own so darn many. I rotate them in and out alot, I have my fav's like my DDR Gunhammer and my Tritium inserted customized Mili but I rotate alot of other knives in and out. ALL the knives I carry are good from my striders, CRK's, CRKT's, Benchies, Spydies whatever, so the whole ONE good knife thing doesnt hold water with me. Plus its my perogative:D, try it you might like it.

i carry a folder and a fixed. cause i can, i guess. and like barrabas74 im a bit of a nut. some days i look at all my busses and have to decide which one to carry.

ive even gone so far as dressing appropriately to carry a specific knife, ie an extra large shirt to cover a lower dropped sheath.

its a sickness, i know. but a very special one.

Jeez man and I thought that I was the only one who did that, those pesky GW's like to poke out.;)

I am an admitted knife KNUT. I carry many knives every day, and the lowest quality you are likely to catch me with is a Case or two. My job involves a lot of demolition/renovation/construction type work. As far as I know, we haven't been caught up at any time in the last six years. I don't have time to stop and sharpen a knife at work, and concrete, porcelin and ceramic tile are very hard on edges. My record so far was eight very dull blades to sharpen at the end of the day.

Show me a knife that will take a razor edge and hold it despite collisions with concrete and ceramic, and I might be able to get by on one knife. Until then, I'll keep wearing carpenter jeans with knives in all the pockets.

I carry a lockback for general cutting purposes.
I carry a micra because it has screwdriver blades that have square corners. I carry a Vic classic because it has a nice little "screwdriver blade" that makes a nice little tool for prying and it has real tweezers and a toothpick. I've never found any use for the micra tweezers.

I don't like the cutting blades on a leatherman. I don't like the screwdriver blades on the SAKs. I do want screwdrivers and I do like a real blade that opens one-handed and clips to my pocket for general cutting. So for me, one knife will not do. Has to be three.

And yes, there are many threads on this.

I carry one main knife (EDC) say a Spyderco Military. This is a utility knife for all things needing to be cut. Then I will have a money clip to hold my dead presidents so it may as well have a blade in it such as a Crickit or a Kershaw Chive. Now that is (2) on my person, if I have used the blade on the $$$clip in a year I would be surprised, but I always know it is there. Number (3)... I have carried a Canvas Filson Breif case for some 20 years. I have ALWAYS had a multitool of some sort in that bag. Today i have a Leatherman E307 knife/screwdrive. Now for the last couple of years I have been making a lunch for work rather than going out and I have a small Custom 3" Thin fixed blade knife I use for cutting fruit or a sandwhich or some cheese or the like. I would love to carry alot of my knives but if you don't have some kind of regimented system, you can end up losing some nice equipment. So I try and keep it simple....

I do carry three knives, but it's not because I am a knife nut or because I am violent or anything. I carry my one handed opener (usually a nicer looking one, but if I am going camping or whatnot I take a more robust one) for tasks which require that I only use one hand to manipulate my knife. The other two knives I carry are leathermans. One is a micra attached to my keychain, and the other is a charge tti because it always finds a way to be useful. I don't carry more than one knife that is just a knife, and I dont always carry my charge. The micra I only take b/c its on a keychain, and if I dont have my charge, it will often suffice.

Well, I carry a Leatherman Wave, because I use it everyday for work stuff, rarely use the knife blade on it, actually considering changing it out for something else, but haven't figured out what or how yet.
I carry a decent sized one hander for all your basic user stuff, boxes, string, stripping wires, etc, again work actually has me doing knife related stuff alot everyday.
And then I carry a nice stockman or whittler because I have since I was a kid, and they are more sheeple friendly anyway. And yeah, when I get some down time occasionally, I whittle.
Another question for everybody, who carries sharpening stuff on them all the time? :D I've got at least a small stone in my toolkit(briefcase style thing)

Many people that carry around a multi tool and a pocket knife have multiple knife blades on them. You don't think about it until someone else points it out to you really. My Leatherman Wave multi tool has two blades on it one which will probably never see much use at all. My Bear Mini Jaw pliers has one that I never even open or use. But they have to count. I mean they sure would at an airport or arrest situation and would add up to multiple blades once they added in my single blade one hand opener that is always on my pocket also.

Honestly I could really go for a Multi tool with no blades on it so long as it was every bit as nice as the ones that had blades. I mainly use the Wave I haven't had that long really, for the scissors, and the pliers and nothing else. Mabye the file on rare occasions. The Min Bear Jaw is like a really nice small tweezers and that is about the only thing on that tool I ever use. I'd sooner use a Multi with a large and small plier, no blades at all, nice scissors and maybe some small torx screw and phillips and flat head drivers over anything if someone could just make it.

I do find it handy to have a serrated and plain edge available that I never use much or care about that much. I loan these if someone needs to borrow my knife. That way it spares my good knife from abuse.

For me to carry only one knife I would feel very restricted and unprepared. Think of all the options you like to have in everyday life. Having multiple options about how you eat, drink, work and play is one of the things that make life interesting. The only good things in life that I am happy to have only one of is my GF. We have been together now for 17 years, although I do have some knives that were around before her and will probably out last both of us.:D

When I was working, I rarely carried only one pen and one pencil. Even now, I generally have a few within easy reach. Why restrict cutting tools?

One for me to use on the spur of the moment and admire.
One with a screwdriver and bottle opener and nail file that doubles as a loaner.
One back-up.
One multi-tool.
That's only four. On the weekends when I might be doing heavier cutting I'll add a fixed blade.
Four is barely enough.

I really only need to carry around a multitool on a daily basis, and usually that's it. I'll add or substitute other edged tools depending on my activities and anticipated tasks. However, sometimes I carry something in addition not because I necessarily need it, but because I like my knives and I enjoy carrying and using them. It's not always a matter of practicality, it's simply pleasurable. People who collect or enjoy, say, cars only need one. My wife really only needs about three or four pairs of shoes, but she has . . . more.

I carry a Leatherman Wave all the time, and the diamond file works quite well as a field expedient sharpener. I also carry a pair of double-sided DMT Diafolds in a jacket pocket, X-Coarse/Coarse and Fine/X-fine. It's nice to be able to fix a trashed edge in the field or on a break at work.

i typically have something to at least touch up an edge in/on my desk and i keep one in my car

i typically have 2 knives, not counting multi-tools/SAKs, a Sebenza and a Ladybug or Jester. the little Spydercos are good around the sheeple, and i just keep one on the keys, so it's always there

i almost never cut anything with the Leatherman or SAK, but i guess i could. i use about every tool on them every so often though, whether i'm at home or work, or someone else's car, i never have to look for pliers, a screwdriver, allen wrench, etc... unless it's something really odd
