I've heard (read) some talk about etching a blade to see the 'sweet spot' and wondered what the best way to do this was.

Also, what's the best way for getting a patina started other than years of dedicated use?

Finally, where would I find some good information about rehandling a khukhri? I love my M43, but I want to make it a little more "mine", if you know what i mean.

Indeed it is. Perhaps I should edit my post to say I'd like some current discussion from current members experience on HI blades? I have used the search function for the past week and gotten a lot of great ideas, I'm leaning towards the vinegar/lemon juice mix to etch my blade. There's a ton of useful information on the search, but a lot of it is old and I'd like to "talk" to some people before I take my blade and wander off into the unknown. Thanks, though.

Yep, try the search function. Also, there is the Tips Tricks and Useful Finds sticky thread at the top of the page:)

Good luck! The m43 is a great choice:D:thumbup:

Oops:foot:

You posted while I posted. Yes, the vinegar/lemon juice works well

I use an acid metal sequestering agent to bring out mine, but that's because i have hundreds of gallons of it.

A green scotchbrite pad removes that pesky mirror polish, and gives a nice brushed finish while removing rust. Looks like a villager as it comes from Nepal.

I etch with Ferric Chloride and vinegar. Lemon juice, mustard, and the like will work.

My usual method for etching was to use Ferric Chloride diluted 5 to 1. I'd put it on with a cotton ball until it reached the color I liked. Then I'd rinse, scrub with 000 steel wool and, repeat as needed. Andrew Colglazier uses the hot vinegar method where you get the vinegar hot and let it soak. Then you rinse and scrub. I just got a GBC in trade that he etched. It looks great.

In this thread you can see how I rehandled my BDC.

I have learned much since and have to recommend FULLY filing down the tang. I didn't and since they are not flat at all I'm in the process of redoing it.
