Hey. This is just a general thread about throwing stars.

I'm really interested in the art, even to the point of making my own.
Unfortunately, there seems no place to buy bulk amounts of shuriken.
Any ideas about making them, or buying them?
Thanks.

I used to make them out of all sorts of things. Some of the better ones were big square washers that I ground points and edges on. You can also make little light, but very sharp ones by gluing four box cutter blades together.

Throwing stars are very common in most parts of the country, our local flea market sports a number of sellers, and we can buy them on-line. Unfortunately, New York State has made them illegal. So we cannot ship them to you, and most likely you can not lawfully transport or sell them. That is a real shame since these things are on par with steel tipped darts, fun to throw, and about as lethal.

Yeah, Surprisingly, If you get creative with metal food can lids, you can get some pretty good results.
I've had some luck flattening bottle caps and sharpening them too.
Really? there illegal in NY? heh heh, oh well. Yet another fantastic weapon thats too good, for it's own good. ^_^

Not2sharp: Nice website, do you sell throwing stars? if you do, I can't find them.

No, I do not sell them. I just enjoy tossing them around. They are fun to play with, but near worthless as weapons. Simply not enough weight, impact, range, accuracy, or peneration. You would be better off throwing a brick.

Thanks, Very nice. all the stars there (except cold steel) are all really fancy and designer stars. I wonder in ninjas cared about "platinum finish" stars. ^_^

I recently received a few "real deal" shuriken from a friend who studied the art for some time. He gave me a couple "star" style as well as "bo" shuriken (think 4 sided 6-7" rods with a point on one end) as well as some training tips on how to properly throw them.

They are the exact style that he and other students used and they are simple 4 point stars with a whole in the middle made out of mild carbon steel. Nothing fancy, but when thrown how instructed, they hit pretty hard and deep. Granted, they are dangerous but not really deadly (unless you're a master at throwing them). Lots of fun:)

google shurikenjutsu for some real information on how they were actually used:thumbup:

I remeber I used to tape Razor Blades together and throw them into boxes. But if you want to make your own ones I'd either get eletrical box covers from a hardware store use a hacksaw to cut out the design you want and file down the points so they stick well. Or if you want the easy way out.

Theres a site that sells them for about $4 each with a pouch and they have free shipping. Note that they are not the best that you can have but they are tons of fun to throw around. And if you are more interested in Bo Shurikens i'd just go to Home Depot and buy steel rod and cut into 6-8 inch sections and grind down the tips.

Also I used to go to Auto Parts store and the sold these thin metal rods for like 25 cents for like 6 of them. I took them home and filed the tips to a point and I used those to practice inside. Once you get the hand of them its quite a bit of fun :D

I seen areally nice Shuriken made by 29 KNives on a knife wbesite but it was pricy. Awesome looking Star though. Looked like you would have trouble getting it out without getting cut!

There are a couple of sites I have seen that seel them cheaply in large amounts. Really, if you want to get good at throwing them why would you want cheap ones? I figured you would want good ones that fly really well.
