General Umfaan/Sebenza Questions???

I just got an Umfaan and am very pleased with it. Awesome little knife, just what I wanted and I expect to carry it for years. Now I am on the lookout for a used small regular Sebenza.

I do have some general questions about the knives that I haven't seen on the official or unofficial FAQ's.

1) After opening and the lock engages, are you supposed to push the bar lock over more for added strength or is it fine where it is?

2) Has anyone every had the non-graphic side of an Umfaan polished?

3) Do most people carry the small in a sheath or use the clip?

4) How often do I need to apply lube and where and what kind do you guys use?

Thanks in advance....JT

Hi JTurner and congrats on your purchase.

I can answer some of your questions I think...

1) You should not need to push the lock over any from its original landing point which should be 50-70% of the tang thickness. Under hard use the lock may move closer to the opposing scale but that is normal. I'm afraid that if you pushed it over manually it would increase the wear to the lock.

2) Not that I'm aware of but you could do it yourself fairly easy.

3) I think it depends on occasion and preference. I prefer to carry mine clipped to my pocket but I also have several of my sheaths for different situations (go figure) and one of Gary Graley's sheaths as well.

4) I only lube my knives after useage that would require additional lubeing or when the knife feels like it needs it. I like to use a product by Finish Line called Teflon-Plus Dry. It's sold in bicycle shops and has proven very effective for my needs. I also found that it performs better than White Lightning in most cases.

Hope that helps a little :)

For lube I really do like the fluorinated grease packaged by CRK, it works very well and the syringe applicator is handy. I do use a very nice little sheath for my Umfaan that Gary Graley sent me at Christmas a few years back, but carry one in a slipsheath in my pocket next to my wallet more often. And no, you don’t need to squeeze the lock to make it work properly.

Thanks guys. I figured you weren't supposed to push the lock over farther, but when I first got the Umfaan I did and wondered if that was how to strengthen the engagement of the lock. Cpirtle -- it does seem like it would cause increased wear if you push the lock over everytime you use the knife.

stjames -- I saw your collection on another post. I now have that pic as my wallpaper. Wow...what a sight. It makes me want to get one of the wood overlay smalls -- but I just can't convince myself that spending that much on a knife is OK. Looks like it didn't take much to convince yourself though. Oh well... I guess I will just have to keep my eyes out for a regular small.

Thanks again...JT

I also use the Finish Line dry Teflon lube! It works a TREAT! I will get some of the CRK Flor grease as well, but I can't see it doing a better job...:p

I carry the Small Sebenza in a sheath...works best for me, saves me digging around in my pocket. But I'd suggest the Small Wood Inlay to be in your future, handy knife! Here is a pic of mine along side my favourite watch, the Swiss Army Officer watch in Stainless steel with a custom stainless watch band made by a company called Don Juan that was recently found on Ebay not too long ago by a formite...

I carry my small Sebbie either clipped to my right front pocket or at the bottom of my right rear pocket. When I eventually get an Umfaan, I would like to get one of Gary's sheaths for it.
For lubrication I use Break Free.

JTurner:

I have a small regular Sebenza in excellent condition (very light use) with the original box and "birthday" card. I might consider selling it. Are you still interested in aquiring one? My e-mail is: hovendenmattj@yahoo.com.

Right now I'm trying out White Lightning. So far, so good.

I carry my small plain loose in the pocket, or in one of Gary's sheaths. Decided I don't like clips, for the most part. Highly recommend a Gary Graley sheath. There's a reason he gets so much praise around here. I even specifically ordered a custom without a clip, because I'm going to send it to Gary for a sheath.

Owen,
Is that the same sebbie of yours I saw. Is the sheath new? Did not have time to read all these poats right now so thought I'd ask.
Thanks,
Chuck

Hey Chuck:)
I think I got the sheath the first week in May(?).
Same Seb. Yesterday, today, and ten years from now I don't doubt;)
The only thing I carry more is my EDC. Between those two, I really don't need (or particularly want) anything else. Kind of makes them both a bargain.
Wonder how many other people think a Sebenza (or a DDR, Mayo, or Carson for that matter) is a "best buy", because it saves you so much money from knives you would have bought, but didn't? I guess there's a flip side to that, too, but anything less is just...less:p

Making sure I fulfill my smiley quota for the day:rolleyes:,
Owen
