My first Wave opening knife was the combat Karambit.
Works REALLY well with the Finger hole on the handle.

I just picked up a Horseman which is a great practical knife.
But I don't find the Wave opening to be as big of an advantage when you don't have the finger hole.

How do you use the Wave?

depends which pocket you carry it in.

from a front pocket, place your index finger on the spine and thumb on the scale opposite the clip when you draw.

from a rear pocket, where i carry, i grab the scale with my thumb, and the clip with my index finger. when i draw, i slightly cant the knife so the wave catches on my pocket.

I have really come around to loving the Karambit handle! I would like to see every different blade offered with this handle....the ring makes so much sense!

As for the other handles, practice, practice, practice...

Thanks for that tip about putting the index finger on the spine. I wouldn't have tried that naturally. Will experiment with the different modes of carry.

The OTHER thing about the Horseman VS the Karambit is the size of the Wave notch...the one on the Karambit is much larger and at a different angle.

I am thinking about picking up another Karambit with the Bullnose now...

Pants can make a difference in the wave draw. I have a couple pairs where there is just something about how they are made that makes the draw more difficult.

Oh!!!
I wasn't wearing pants...will try again.
(Just kidding....NEVER practice Karambit draws without pants!)

Hello,
I just got a Horseman for my birthday. I am impressed by how sharp it was out of the box and now I realize my version of "razor sharp" could use some work. Anyhow I am also having trouble with wave opening. I will look into the finger on the spine thing but when I was hooking the wave on my pants I only got it to open about 3/4 of the way. The pivot seems to have a fair amount of resistance. Perhaps this is necessary to keep it from opening up in my pocket? Is loosening the pivot screw a bad idea? Do I need to use some lube?

If its a new knife that will wear in soon enough. You can play with the pivot if its really too stiff.

If you twist the knife a bit as you deploy it that will help your pocket grab the wave and throw the blade out better.

Thanks for the tip about putting my index finger on the spine.

It is true that pocket geometry matters. I find it much easier to draw from a pair of dress slacks then a pair of jeans. This may be because I have practiced my draw more from slacks. I find the key is keeping the knife vertical so the wave feature engages the seam of the pocket, this is where putting your index finger on the spine helps.

Personally, I'm not crazy about the wave. I keep my knife in my back pocket where I've sewn a vertical seam in the pocket so my knife always stays in a vertical position. I have the Mini CQC-7 and 2 or 3 times I've opened it accidentally (minor cuts twice)because the wave got hung up on something. I could do without the wave. I think the liabilities outweigh the benefits. I'm sure some love it but for me it is unnecessary and a bit dangerous.

S---Just try become more aware of the Wave. It will become second nature then. ;)
