General woods knife: BK7 vs BK5

Howdy folks-

So I'm considering adding a BK5 'Magnum Camp' to an order from Chestnut Ridge. But I'm quite torn on this knife!

I'm looking for thoughts from folks who have used this particular beast (the BK5, that is).

Do you feel there is anything the BK5 does better than a plain-jane BK7 will do? How would you expect it to fair as a general woods knife?

I suspect the choil would be limiting for wood work, and that the 'finesse' of the BK5 might make it substantially less chop-o-licious than the BK7.

So, given that it would not be purchased for use as a kitchen knife, what say you?

I gotta go with the BK7 on this one. The BK5 is tough blade, but I always used mine in the kitchen and meat processing during hunting season than anything else. The curved blade made one helluva meat slicer, it turned 60lbs of vension into thin jerky in no time.

Jerry and Ethan know their business when it comes to knives, of that there is no doubt. But I think it should have been called the Magnum Kitchen, rather than the Magnum Camp. Now, I will say this, it could be used for a hard use woods knife, and never let you down, I just think that the BK7 would be better. Better men than me will post their opinion here as well, so don't base the decision off my tiny brain.:D

I really like my BK7 a lot. To me, I don't see the BK5 doing anything the BK7 can't.

I'm all about owning things that are multi-taskers and the BK7 is certainly a multi-task tool and probably more so than the BK5. The BK7 is probably one of the most well designed "big" knives out there. A lot of thought went into it to do a lot of different jobs. Just my opinion anyway.

the BK5 will slaughter and dress out a wild hog better - the BK7 will do a better job of processing firewood to cook it on - get both! :D

Nothing useful here... just me babbling.
First off, I like the way you think vic!

Now, my 2 cents. I own a 7 and have been drooling over the 5 since Bladite first mentioned it was on the way... so I am off to buy one. But for what? Honestly, the kitchen. It looks like it would do a phenomenal job of slicing and dicing. But with the curve to the blade I can't imagine that it would handle bushcraft as well as the 7. To be fair though, I haven't used my 7 in the kitchen. Maybe I have shortchanged it. Maybe we'll fix that!

I'd be very interested to hear Ethan weigh in on this thread, specifically as to what uses were in mind when the 5 was designed. BTW, all great knives, in different ways.

Back to the beginning... get both!

As far as a general-use-all-purpose woods knife, my vote goes for the BK7. I don't personally own a BK5, so I can't really speak to its backwoods worth. It does, however, seem better suited for kitchen use. But then, one can never own too many knives, can one?
