Does anyone possibly know what the differences are between the different generations of rats. I'm new to rats and i often see first second or third generation being refered too.

Thanks Doug,

Hey Doug, here is a picture of the Generation 1 Rat scales:

And here is a picture of the Generation 2 Rat scales:

Also, I don't know if I am explaining this well...but the middle tube fastener on the Gen II scales protrudes out a little more than the other two, but its still flush with the micarta scales. If anyone else has a better way to explain it, please share! Hope this helps bro!

Also, the Howling Rat went through some generation changes, not sure if I have all the pictures.

Gen 1 HR, THE BEST, small choil
Gen 2 HR ...still good, but throws off the "flow" of the knife, large choil.
Then variants, Howling Fat, serrated spine, Double cut, Tan...maybe a custom shop out there.

Hey, there is not supposed to be a comma between the double cut and tan, as you can see. :p Also, you forgot about the HR with a band-breaker, not that I have one of those (at least one that I will admit to having :D).

Thanks fella's that definately helps. I'll take the Ratweiler thank you very much. :D The one in the middle of this pic. Oh and that one at the top also. Heck just wrap them all up. :)
Thanks again for the imfo guys.

The howler had in theory 3 generations if you count the HRLM. Also quite a bit of variations within each run regarding the grind.

The first generation with a small choil was available only in two colours, the tan one at six o'clock was a special for some SAR conference (no, it's not for sale), the normal one was black.

The second generation had a bigger choil and many smaller runs. Colour was I think only black but there might've been a tan version as well. The main different run was the fat howler (really fat) at 5'clock. Plus a couple of custom shop ones. The custom run had a band breaker and at least 3 different variations in the serrations.

The HRLM was originally only in black with or without the new logo. They had a tan run that they only sold initially at some show. Later all the colour variations became available, my fav being the tan/tan version.

Also the ratwaeiler had two generations, pic is of the 2nd one and of course the Chopweiler

Great pics and imfo guys greatly appreciated. Now all i need is to find an early Ratmastiff and ratweiler and possibly a desert jack. All great looking knives. Thanks Doug,

Hey?! That's my picture! :D

Actually the part that you can feel the tube fasteners on the 2nd generation when you hold the knife always made me think it was unfinished. The Weiler is a great knife but there are better rats out there.

There is always an evolution to things driven by many factors. A new Corvette is certainly mechanically superior to a early sixties split-window. Still, there is something about that classic! :D

Are there?! I think the old school & classic Rats are better than the new ones! The handles were certainly prettier, and the designs were very very unique. IMHO, the older the better!

+1, I'm fondling my Ratweiler right now (lol, that sounds dirty)
