I have been looking around at new generators for awhile inorder to buy a new one for the camp. For years I have been using the Honda EZ-2500. Its been a great generator, still is but it is burning some oil, and I would like to retire it and use it around the home for the numerous power failiers we get out here.

At the camp I use the generator quite abit. The problem (although minor) is that the gas tank is small (one gallon) and I have to refuel every 4 and a half hours.

Okay, the Yamaha EF2600 looks to be the right unit. Similar output, but with a 3 gallon tank that would eliminate refueling all the time. Yamaha claims it will run about 12 hours at half load. Seems to be slightly heavier on fuel than the Honda?, but I am not sure. I want a non inverter unit.

There are a couple of dealers for the Yamaha and I think I the one dealer may be trying to suck me into buying older stock. This dealer told me to buy the slightly older model that was made in Japan, claiming that the newer ones made in China have had a bad habit of blowing out rear seals when used in colder weather less than -5 C or about 20F. Is this true? Or is this guy trying to sell me his old stock at a higher price? He is retailing the older ones for $1500, but the newer chinese made idenical unit can be had for only $900 at the other dealer. Both units are made and warranted by Yamaha. It comes with a 2 year warranty, so I am thinking that there is probably nothing really wrong with the chinese made unit, and that the other dealer is making up the bad seal story.

So should I go with the Yamaha, or the Honda which I know is tried and true reliability. Or should I look at the Kawasakis or?

A Chinese made Yamaha?

I'd stick with a Honda, made in Japan, or as stated above, an Onan.

Once you decide on what generator you want, be sure and type the exact model number and brand into Froogle, under the more options at google, I usually find the best deal there. If dealer is out of state, you may save some taxes to offset shipping. Worth a try, I have found it very good at searching out the best deals. Good Luck

I did some research on the web about the chinese line of Yamahas, and spoke to a few other people around here. The concences of it all is to avoid buying the chinese version. On the web there were comments about increased fuel consumption, and this is a huge concern. Generators are cheap, but fuel is not. There is concern about materials used in construction. While the Chinese have become pretty good in terms of manufacturing, their materials are not. Often the steel and other materials are of poor quality leading to early failiers.

At this point I am looking at the Hondas.

I bought a Gen-Pro Gillette for my whole house generator. Gillette also has a full line of smaller genarators with Honda engines and offer free shipping. I had one part that I had to replace and they shipped it over night at no charge. Great customer service and a quality product. My unit has powered the house on numerous power outages without fail.
