Generic knife question #1: what's a good large fixed blade?

I'm looking for a good survivalist caught in the middle of nowhere knife that can: chop small tree branches/brush with ease; pierce reasonably heavy gauge metal; split wood logs; easy to sharpen on old iron; make short work of small game; dig a hole; hold its edge fairly well at the end of the day after all that...

How about Ka-Bar? Any other suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

I have a NextGen KaBar and like it a lot. I'd say it's good for all of the above except "sharpen easily on old iron" ... haven't tried that yet. Pick up a lansky dogbone sharpener and clip the keychain loop to the sheath of the knife ;)
I've chopped branches with it, dug holes. Haven't had to sharpen it yet. The clip point has a sharpened false edge, so it's good for detail work.

Check out Swamp Rat Knife Works, the Camp Tramp might be just what you need. It's convex ground though, so I don't know about sharpening it "on old iron".

Sounds like you need either a Camillus/Becker BK-9 Combat Bowie or the slightly smaller BK-7 Combat Utility...(9 inch blade, VS: a 7 inch blade.).

I would suggest that we need a little more information.

1) How much do you want to spend?
2) How will the knife be stored? (is this something you intend to
carry with you and readily maintain, or a knife that would be
stuffed into a survival kit and generally forgotten until needed)
3) Do you have a limit on weight or size? The "best knife" may turn
out to be a complete tool kit containg various cutting tools.
4) When do you want it? There are a number of excellent knives that
are simply backordered and not available in the near term.

BTW, what do you mean by easy to sharpen on old iron????

For God's sake don't dig with it.
Dig with a stick. If you need the stick to be sharpened or smoothed, use the knife for that.
If you really need to dig somewhere get a shovel.
With that in mind, go back to not2sharp's questions.
