Genesis 1 / SOCOM . . . opinions?

Time for a new blade. Narrowed it down to 2-3 folders. I like the Microtech, seems real smooth. I've only heard about the EDI Genesis 1 lately and haven't handled it. Both blade shapes (& size) look similar. What blade will hold an edge longer? Is EDI available in M2 and/or non-liner lock? Have an AFCK, it's ok. Is the tool steel AFCK much harder? My main concern is edge retention. I just cut with my knives, I don't pry (or do chin-ups!) This will be a user knife, as well as a backup to the Glock 30. No serrations. If BM Pinnacle came in M2 I would consider that as well. I know very little about knife steel, but know that different manufacturers have different results with same steels.
Also, what opinions of overall quality. Heard wobbling blade stories from EDI owners & stiff action on SOCOM. My AFCK has off center blade and scrapes against liner wearing off black coating and I'd hate to spend the $ for another knife without stepping up in quality. Sorry if this topic was OVERLY covered before, but I searched the archives and didn't find much on SOCOM hardness or M2 Genesis1. Any help and opinions are appreciated. If neither SOCOM or EDI is a significant step up from AFCK then I'll just save up for the large Sebenza . . .

Welcome to the forums, Brian. I'm a Microholic. IMHO, MT makes the best production knives available. All of mine have 154 CM blades and edge retention is excellent. The SOCOMs I own are silky smooth, and rock solid. Have you ruled out the LCC? Incredible knife for the money.

I have had the two...in fact, I had 3 Genesis I's since all of them had blade failures after a while. The action on the Gen is silky smooth and its blade ergos were great. I just don't trust the knife since its tolerances fail after a while. For me the anwer was simple. Socom. Much better knife, more reliable lock, still smooth and similar steels.

Go with the Socom.

Is EDI still in business? Their customer service was unreliable after Will Fennell left. Took a long time to get my knife returned. I mean months.

Oh yeah....Welcome to the forums. Great 1st question.

I've handled knives from the Genesis series and the MT SOCOM series. Go with the Microtech SOCOM. I believe M2 steel Genesis 1's were made, but they are harder to find. EDI Genesis just didn't fit my hand right. It was a good knife, but not right for me, and the liner lock on the EDI has design flaws. It wears quickly and sometimes can loosen and cause vertical blade play. I gave it to my brother, and he uses it for everything.

BTW, the AFCK scraping the liners can probably be fixed by using a size 10 Torx wrench and tightening the pivot screw a little bit. I've only had one knife that wouldn't be fixed by tightening the pivot (within reasonable bounds)... and that was the Boker Brend folder (2054 model I think).

Thank you guys for the knowledgable replies!!
Now I can sleep knowing tomorrow I will order a SOCOM AND Mini!

So, the original owner of EDI left? I am way behind in knife lore. Too bad, all the archives I read sounded like EDI had great cust. service. No more M2 Genesis?
No matter, Microtech here I come!
Many thanks - Brian

Hi,

My experience with EDI is 100% positive. I traded a "NIB" Edi Genesis 1 with a BF member and when I got it it had some side to side play (well a lot). When I tried to tighten the axis bolt the "top" broke off even though I didn't start tightening yet.
Finding the new address off EDI Knives was the hardest part but after I reached them by phone I got helped very quickly and within 4 weeks I had a brand new EDI Genesis 1 (improved model) even with the black TiN coating at my doorstep in Holland.

Cheers,

Bagheera

Hey
I agree fully. Go with the MT SOCOM.
I think i am going to get a socom elite in about a week. I've tried it out and it is a great knife. Sturdy as hell and fits and feels great in my hands at least.

Ive never handled the EDI line of knives so I cant comment..As for Microtech ,my first was a three year old SOCOM MA and I was amazed that lockup was rock solid..no blade play....When I recieved it the blade had a lil surface wear and the action/lock was stiffer than im used to....SOoooo a couple hours later and some tired hands I had a 12/97 SOCOM MA that was mirror polished on all contact parts....smooooooth... I have a ATS-34 AFCK and I like it...Both it and the MT hold a good edge, feel good in the hand and carry nicely, but the MT just feels rock solid..

My blades,Family and sale items.

More knives than you can shake a stick at...Well you could shake a stick at all of em,but yer hand would be REALLY tired.

Both knives are great choices - the advantage with the EDI Gen I is the weight and slim size (titanium sides). The Socom is a durable knife IMHO the Socom Elite is a beefier design/construction - both lock up fine. The carry level is lower with the clip placement on the EDI Gen I compared to the socom.

BTW - EDI has new management and www.ediknives.com is working. I spoke with Gerry L. the owner last week. He has relocated production facilities and is cranking again. The Gen 1's I have are great, smooth actions and super sharp out of the box.

Have fun......

Funny...when I try the EDI website it still is under construction...curious...

Bagheera:
You mention 100% positive experience with EDI? But what about; "...some side to side play (well a lot). When I tried to tighten the axis bolt the "top" broke off even though I didn't start tightening yet.
Finding the new address off EDI Knives was the hardest part..." I would rate that 95% positive for EDI customer service and a big fat 0% for the knife itself. It sounds like the replacement must be much better quality.

I should have the Mini SOCOM Friday!
Appreciate all the replies!

U won't be disappointed w/ MT. I have MA SOCOM, it's a hellaof knife. Shaving sharp right out the box and the polished edge just a sight to behold. As for EDI, I handled a couple genesis I in the shop, I think there're nothing special about them, for the money rather go for a BM or something. SOCOM is a far better knife, well worth the money. BTW how does a company stay in business by just makeing 2 knives?? Are Genisis I and II that popular??? Oh, what's up w/ the funky serrations. It's on the other side of the blade!!?? Do they just want to be different?? or is ther an actual advantage for this design?? hmmm......

Hey Guys - useful info - this means I will NOT get the EDI I was thinking about after all - there are so many fine knives out there I want to get - why waste any time and money on something that might not live up to my standards?
