... what do you do if you have a Busse that you want modified? Limited runs, limited editions, discontinued combat grades, customs from knife shows, so on... and there are no blanks left for the custom shop to use, or you just can't afford a custom shop piece.

The simple answer is that you go get it modified, but I'm having a tough time coping with that. I have a CABS that I'd love to get a different handle and blade finish on eventually... but it's marked 1 of 5.

I know it's mine, and I own it, but how do you justify erasing a piece of history like that from existence? Ridding the world of something that possibly might be the last of its kind?

Anyone ever had to go through this?

There are a few examples that I would sort of agree with that on, like some of the blades coming out of the 80's where they are truly one off's, or even though there were a hundred made none have surfaced in 20 years. But for anything like the straight handled knives, production runs, or very minor specialty runs of otherwise production knives, there are many more surrounding them that limits their historical value. The CABS your refering probably won't command a particularly higher price in todays market, even as a long term investement it may not net a good enough profit to be worth holding for 2-10 years, which also depends on how you purchased it, if it was show price or dealer price. At dealer price I'd say just assume your not going to ever make money on it and go for a knife you actually want to use rather than thinking of it as 'money in the bank'.

I would suggest trying to trade someone your fancy CABS for a standard CABS, use it until you have the money to send it into the custom shop to have them put a custom finish and scales on it. For just coating and scales replacement, the custom shop can often meet your request at a small fee. It's a little harder when you want something like a band breaker, a handle reprofile, or other major changes that require time on the grinder.

but then, I have also taken a Thin NICK, shsj, custom shop sar5, sus scrofa, and a very rare micarta handled police recruit to the grinding wheel, so I may not be a good source of advice when it comes to 'should I modify or not' advice o_o

I say mod it to your own desires and make it a "1 of 1" knife that **is** the last of its kind. Don't forget to beat the tar out of it once its been engineered to fit your needs to insure that the race of bladeware of which it is the last remnant was indeed the Legendary Hoggish And Honorable Tribe Of Busse Clans.

However, all my Bussekin are either "beaters" or else "beaters in waiting", so my view is likely seriously skewed in that direction.
