Hello,

Its been a while since I posted here. I used some of the advice from the forum to steer me into a BM 556 that I have nothing but praise for. Anyways, I was looking into buying my dad a nice gentleman's folder for Fathers Day. Last time I was showing him some blades, he really liked the speckled black/red aluminum handle on the 771 Osborne. Besides that is a nice compact folder.

I was wondering what your opinions were on the knife?
Is the BC1 coating worth an extra $30 for a knife that will not see extended, continuous use?
Any other options you can throw out there?
Requirements:
Good lock
Sub 3 inch
Slim profile
Made in USA

I recently found out this model had been discontinued, and there were only a few places it was available. I couldn't find it on newgraham, so I saw it on ebay but it seemed kind of sketchy. After more work, I found it on knifeworks.com (are they a board sponsor-because they had a link to the forums on their website). I hope they have it in stock. I will probably be ordering in a day or two.

Thanks for any advice.

It apopears that the 770 series has been discontinued, so I would grab whichever one you want if you can find it at a reasonable price. I have a 770 Gent's Folder and it, along with my Spydie Kiwi with bone scales, are my two dress up pocket knives. THe 770 version that I have is the original with the plain steel blade and the carbon fiber scales. That three inch blade is a lot of cutting power in such a small package.

I'd have to recommend a Santa fe Stoneworks modded Spyderco, Cricket. Or something.
I have a couple of those, and while they're gorgeous, they're frickin' heavy!!

They're based on the steel-slab-framed Spydies, and add another slab of stone on top. Nice solid feel, but too much for shirt-pocket carry.

I bought my Father a carbon fiber 770 and he thinks it's the best small folder he has ever had (and he is probably right).

It's very light-weight, easy to open (he's getting older and his hands and nails are not very tough), and very classy in appearance.

Good luck,
Allen.

Thanks for the replies.

It seems that the general consensus is that this is a solid gentlemens folder. I went ahead and ordered a 771-01. I decided to pass on the BC1 coating, because I figured it was a bit overkill for the use it will get.

I can't wait to play with it...before I give it to my dad as a gift. :D

I jsut looked up your suggestion and they do look very nice. The southwestern-style has been a big hit in my house. My dad has a bol-o-tie and a custom belt with turquouise and what not. Maybe I can get it for him when he retires away down to new mexico where it is warm. ;)

I think that he should like it. I like mine for its Gent's Pocketknife purpose.
