Gent Knife Size

I'm still in love with my William Henry Spearpoint that I picked up a while back, and I consider it a perfect large Gent's knife. The blade on this knife is right at 3". To me this is about as large as a knife can be and function realistically as a Gent's knife. My reasons are this: many places have a sub 3" law, second a gent's knife should not scare reasonable non-knife nuts. I think going past three inches pushes it for many people. My question is what do you guys think about large gent style knives like the Spyderco Veile and Centofante, or Speedtech or BM 730 Ares, or even those carbon fiber Kotzli wharncliffes? Are these knives to big for their designed function? Don't misunderstand me, I like them all, heck i could throw the Spyderco Lum and Smith models in the mix also. Just do you think they are practical as gent's knives?

I think BM 850S Mel Pardue fits the bill just pefectly. I have one thats still NIB, Its almost too pretty to carry.

A gent's knife should small, unobtrusive and look elegent when pulled out. Personally, I would use the Boker Orion, but I'm too anal about scratching it, so instead I use a long thin Single blade Boker stag handled folder. It was inexpensive $35 and very nice looking. I also like the fact that the blade has the printing on it. Very Classy, IMO. I think a Languinole would work very nicely also. I know my definition is maybe different than your's but I feel a gent's folder should almost never get a good workout. Afterall, if you're going to be a gent, you're wearing your good clothes, right? Now if you're position requires that you dress up everyday and you want something a little heftier, I'd go with a Klotzi, very thin, unobtrusive profile. Or that Mel Pardue. But personally, I'd try to get one of those special pearl handled ones. When I do the "gent thing" I go all out.

I say, "What's in a name?" I'm waiting for a BM Pardue 330-pearl, advertised as a "Gent's Knife" but I'm giving it to my wife for her birthday. And she sure as Hell ain't NO GENTLEMAN. She fights DIRTY!

You said it, Philibob, the BM 330P definitely fits within reasonable parameters of a gent's knife

I think a gent's knife is a small pen knife, like the Case Eisenhower. IMHO you shouldn't try to force feed a so called 'tactical' folder into the gent's category.

To me, a one hander is not necessarily tactical. An elegant one hander like a William Henry or small Centofante is a gent's knife to me. I want to say also that if anybody wants a good deal on a gent's knife, look for the closeout sales on those steel handled Solos. I got one for $20 bucks the other day. It's a shame that Spyderco is closing them out, but heck, I buy enough of their expensive knives that I don't mind getting a break.

I agree with the BM 330. With the standard scales it will actually fit into the watch pocket of a pair of jeans!

I have one with rosewood scales for more dress up occasions (when I put on a shirt with a collar). Walt
