I’d just like to share these pictures I took today. We wear working in some of the poorer neighborhoods in Tijuana today, when a genteel man carrying this hand operated sharpening stone, came walking down the street. It is very common down here for old men to walk through the streets offering to sharpen knives, machetes, axes, etc.

They announce there presences by playing a flute.

I had my Cold steel hawk in my trunk. It was not very sharp. So the genteel man went to work on it, and left it sharp. And he only charged me 1 dollar. I gave him 5.

Shoed him my Winkler axe. He was most defiantly impressed whit it. Told me it was the finest cutting tool he had ever handled. :D

He said it did not need to be sharpened. I always keep it sharp.:grumpy:

Thanks for looking.

Good for you, and nice pics .I love an honest man ,you showed him a sharp axe and he said it was fine ,that does not happen where I am they always say "it could be sharper".

Thanks for the photos.

An online search for "hand crank grinding wheel" will locate some vintage ones for sale.
I recently got a couple to try for axes, etc. Low speed grinding won't heat up so much.

I just might have to buy one later on. Very cool thing.

My hubby used a hand crank grinder on my fillet knife which had a broken tip. Glad he had one, knife as good as new.

Excellent pictures, thank you for sharing. Now it is sharp. .... we hope for additional mod work from you !

Well its sharp now, I’m going to have to completely modify it now. I will keep you all posted.

Thanks for the photos I am sure the man takes pride in his sharpening.
I picked up a hand crank wheel at a garage sale. Works great but I cant find a 4" replacement
stone for it.

...I cant find a 4" replacement stone...

Northern Tool has 5" grinding wheels (stones), maybe they will fit.

I found one of these hand crank grinders that takes up to 8" wheels.
3/4" and 1"-wide white grinding wheels (which cut more easily at these low speeds) can be readily found in the 6" and 8" wheel sizes.

Some woodworkers will use these hand crank grinders (with white grinding wheels) to sharpen their chisels, because it's much faster than hand honing, but won't affect the steel temper.

I imagine these grinders would be very useful to off-the-grid blacksmiths.
