"Gentleman's" Bali!

Hi all!

I've been lurking around this forum, and got the "Balisong Bug" a couple of months ago and then picked up a couple of Jaguars to start flippin'. I've been searching the web for some more Bali's, but like most of you, only seem to find the usual - BM 42's, older PC's, and then everything else like jags, bears, and the "horde" from the Pacific Rim!

I just stumbled upon what seems to be a real nice "Gentleman's" style of balisong. It's made by Lion Steel of Italy. The blade has INOX stamped on it, so I suspect it's probably something like 440 whatever stainless. The handles are solid polished brass with micarta scales. You can see it here at World Knives:

I dealt with Chris Hyde there, and picked one up from him. He's great to deal with, very customer oriented. Responds quickly to emails and phone calls. This was the second knife I've gotten from him, and I like both of them. This Bali sells for $34.99 on his site. I think it really fits that inbetween spot between jaguars and forking out over $100.00 for a Bali.

How does it flip? How is the lockup and the blade wobble? Are the pins any good?

Sorry for all the questions, but I've sort of been looking for something like this too, but never had the nerve to buy one.

I have one that looks just like that from FOX. It flips nicely, wobbles very little too. It has very thin handles and a small latch which may affect manipulations.

Things may never get better, but they can always get worse.

SkrunchaMunch,

I took this one and gave it a good treatment of White Lightning - I'll probably try Militec after I run out of this stuff - and it flips real nice. This one locks up fine with no blade wobble at all. I need to get used to the ultra light handles. The pins seem fine, but we won't really know until a few months or so!

The blade came hair poppin' sharp too! I hope either some US manufacturers get off the stick, or some more dealers like World Knives fine some more balis like this for the money! It's the same reason that I like CRKT, BK&T, and Rekat, a whole lotta knife for the money!

alxdagr8,

Dammit, just because you had to post those links, I just had to go and order a couple of Balis!

I really like the looks of that brass and blonde horn, as well as the red stamina one as well. I'll let you all know how they are when they get here!

if you're not now...you never were!

Sorry to be a spoilsport here, but I got one of these about a year ago and while the handles are very nice, solid brass, nicely done insert (Rosewood in my case), they are very narrow and very smooth and very round and hard to keep a good grip on. The joints are very loose and very sloppy for any thing but the most basic manipulations. The pins are brass. I haven't manipulated mine very hard because of that. Brass is a very soft metal and tends to not do well as a balisong pin. Sorry. Maybe they've improved in the last year.

..."sort of?" i take it there's a fairly limited number of options when ordering.

...or were you referring to self-made modifications? just curious.
