Hey folks...have a great folder (griptilian) I use for backpacking/hiking, a brand new fixed blade (Cold Steel Master Hunter - thanks for all of the fixed blade hunting knife info), and now need to fill out my trio with a great gentleman's folder...I wear a suit M-F, and would like something slim with smooth, slick handles (ti, steel, etc.)...I like the smaller Spyderco's (Bug, Honeybee, Ladybug, Grasshopper), but don't know how I'd like a non-locking folding knife...can anyone provide some info on this style (SLIPITS) of non-locking blade, and other suggestions for not-too-expensive gentleman's folders? Thanks!

I've been interested in getting one of the Utica Catskill line of knives recently. Traditional folders with 1095 steel, can be found online for about $30.

SanRenMu 710.

Great gentleman's folder at around $10 shipped.
Really well made, strong, and probably close to as sheeple friendly as you can get without wooden inlay/handles.

Where have I seen that design before?

Mnandi is probably the ultimate gentlman's folder IMO. If you're going to get a slipjoint I'd reccomend the Case Swayback Jack with CV steel or a GEC#25.

Is that just completely blatant, or is it just me?

I'm a fan of the Boker Exskelibur 1 as well. I just picked one up and have to say that I am pretty impressed. The G-10 is smooth, but still offers some grip, the finish on the blade is beautiful, the action on the blade is smooth as hell, the lockup is strong witht the blue Ti liner lock, and the red liner on the one side of the G-10 backspacer adds a nice little flair. I did have a problem trying to switch the clip to tip up though. The screws wouldn't bottom out so I had to go back to tip down, which is unfortunate.

But the one I always recommend when this question is asked is the Kershaw Sapphire. Beautiful blue Ti scales, steel liner lock, tip up/tip down setup, polished AUS-8 blade. Very nice for around $50 or less.

The Spyderco Slipits are nice. I have a UKPK that I carry every so often and I've never worried about the blade closing on me. A Ti model is supposed to be released (maybe has been released?). That may be what you're looking for if you want a nice smooth Slipit.

The best will be if you could give a budget because some of the knives mentioned already are high end. To some not expensive but to others they can be.

A good gentleman's folder non locking for under $100 is a good old Case or Swiss Army knife.

Kershaw has some great gentlemans knives with wood inlays for an affordable price and personally I love these!

Then at the other scale of close to $400 the Mnandi is a great knife.

You can also look into these

If you do decide you want a non-locking blade, Spyderco's UKPKs stay open quite well, despite the lack of a lock.

I believe a Ti one is on it's way.

A blatant and shameless copy of a Sebenza.

@ HuntersHikes - When I think of smooth handled thin knife, the first one that comes to mind is a Kershaw Leek.

+1 for the 940/943. slim, sleek. they have the same scale set, great design. tons of different limiteds, i think they had both cf and titanium scaled limited runs, i have a 940 with d2 in a limited run. great knife imo

i had another suggestion but i forget. btw, i feel the reverse tanto is more sheeple friendly. the 943 looks great and is probably the better slicer but it looks wicked which really seems to be a double bladed sword in this world

I would like to get a gentleman's folder, but first I have to pass the gentleman's test. I don't have high hopes. If I get pulled over while carring a gentleman's folder and they see that I am obviously not a gentleman, the judge will say, "$30.00 or 30 days!" I will end up in "gentleman impersonator's" jail.

I love my kershaw leek, it's an incredible slicer, but it's definitely not sheeple/office friendly IMO.

The reason most people don't like slip joints is that they never get their hands on a high quality one.

Check out the Case Swayback Jack in Chestnut with the CV high carbon steel blade. For me it is the perfect EDC utility knife, very sheeple friendly. Cuts like a champ and holds a good edge.

Hi,

Do you want a modern Gentleman's folder or a traditional one? If modern, I'm with morrowj, a Leek is all you need.

If you lean traditional, a Case Swayback is truly a fine piece. But I like the GEC #25 pattern myself. A tough knife that fits the pocket well and is tank tough. They are made from 1095 and run harder than Case's CV. I've also got a Queen Whittler with amber-bone stag handles and D2 blades that is to die for also.
