Gentleman's knife?

I'm looking for a gentleman's knife that would be suitable to wear clipped to a suit-pants pocket at up-scale gatherings.

I'm hooked on Spyderco lately, but frankly, Spyderco is a work-knife sort of company that doesn't put priority on looks.

Are there any that could pass as a GM's knife with good materials (no plastic) that could pass for tasteful for this sort of occasion?

If not, I guess I'll just have to use a Benchmade.;)

Spyderco and Benchmade are both great companies, but neither are really up-scale (depending on how you define that word).

I've seen some SS handled Spydies that have been customized and look very nice. You can have the handles engraved, or you can get a jeweler to do stuff with them.

A plain SS Dragonfly looks very appealing to my eyes.

Hello,

I think Spyderco produces several knives that are very classy.
------chinese folder
------the upcoming all-stainless kiwi, and the current kiwi
------carbon fiber delica, cricket, police

There are many others.

The Calypso. Not the Jr, the full sized one. Micarta scales, 4" blade, a classy looking knife. My daughter says it looks like a steak knife. :-)

To my eye, pretty much any of the micarta models are pretty nice looking and definitely have their place. Also, the Salsa would work in this application if you like the styling.

Another long time favorite of mine is the C40 Jot Khalsa, very classy to my eye, but it is a little "weird" for some people. That being said, I just barely got a hold of a D' Holder Toad and it's a nice little knife. It's only a 1.5" blade so it really doesn't scare anyone and it really cuts pretty nice. It's my new knife for the inside pocket of my suit jacket and the most often to come out in those occasions.

Oooh. A stainless Kiwi? That sounds promising.
I've got a Salsa coming but that's going to draw a lot of attention clipped to blue or black slacks.
I'll have to check out the Viele too. Thanks everyone.

fulloflead, have you read the post about Santa fe Stoneworks? Real neat stuff there...

That's a GREAT idea! I didn't see much for sale on their site at all though. Where are good places to buy them?

Their site is a tad difficult to navigate. Glad you found your way through.:)

The KnifeCenter has either a Rookie or Delica with mother-of-pearl.

Yes it is. Beautiful stuff though!
I didn't care for the Calydascope designs but I really like the jewlery designs.

Seems like the stone would make it a little heavier in that handle which I think I'd like. Is that right?

You don't see these too much for sale on the forums or on Ebay much do you? It's probably for good reason. I guess the people who buy them keep them. I would (will) too. ;)

Thanks, Tio, I'll check out the Pearl ones on Knife Center too.

How about the decorated Sebenza? Though not my style, everybody says it's a classy knife.
Speaking for my part, I'd pick a Kershaw Chive. It's simple, small and good looking. The auto opening feature may pose some legal problems though.

not to be a wet blanket or anything, but in the "up-scale" social circles ive on occassion traveled in, ANY knife clipped to suit pants would look, shall we say untasteful. YMMV.
my solution is a spydie navigator (very cheap at smokey mountain knife works right now - $20 last time i checked) clipped to the inside change pocket. it works great, doesnt get in the way and is both sheeple friendly and ready to work w/ VG10 blade and Al handle.
you might want to think about going this route.

one word of caution: read my gripes about this knife and how i solved them

I agree with jesthay. I use a Viele as my dress-up carry. A very classy knife IMO.

The Herbst folder is very classy looking and the Veile is a good suggestion also. I carry my carbon fiber Dragonfly on the rare occasions I have to wear a suit or slacks. The anniversary Delica would fit the bill also...:)

If you're willing to consider modified Spydies you should check out Frank Recupero's work over at BladeArt. I have a Benchmade 710 that he reworked in desert ironwood and his work is amazing!

Check out that CoPilot in Lapis and Turquoise. Wow!
