Gently convexing my DPX H.E.S.T.

Hello,

the HEST asked to be convexed since I got it.
SO today I have found some 600 sandpaper for metal, my good old leather belt...
30 minutes later, I had "deshouldered" the edge and get a gentle convexed edge.
After some stropping this is what I got:

I love that little big knife which I carry everyday in my EDC bag.

cheers
nemo

 Your knife mods look great as usual Nemo. Every time you post I get the urge to get a new ESEE just to strip it down. :D

Nice work Nemo. You carry it everyday? ;)
Yes everyday unless I go to the swinging London, then I carry my very old SAK.
But the rest of the time, I got a folder clipped (currently an amazing Spyderco Gayle Bradley) and the HEST in my EDC bag.

Thank you RustyFenrir. The HEST is my favorite little FB so far, and I got a bunch of excellent knives (an Izula an RC3...). This knife is just great to use hard !
With this improved edge, the HEST is now also great for woodworking...

I was not doubting you mate. It's just know that the carrying laws are roughly the same in France and the UK, hence me asking. Love your stripped knives btw!

Thanks. Yep if I follow the law I cannot even carry a SAK in France and if I use it to defend myself I'll be in big trouble.
(ils considèrent la destination de l'objet... ainsi un tournevis peut devenir une arme, tout comme une clef anglaise dans la portière ou un couteau Suisse dans la poche...)
I've been controlled some times and my large Sebenza was returned to me immediatly as it was not an automatic knife... I was sorry to disappoint the gendarmes on that....:D

Nemo, that HEST of yours just looks cooler every time I see a pic of it - nice work!

that is one great looking knife. wish i trusted my skills a tad more, or i would go for that. in time, in time....for now i'll leave that work to the experts, and fiddle with cheaper, less well thought of blades here. nice work!

it looks like you've stripped the origional coating off the knife, it looks good!
if you did strip it off, how did you take off the coating?
and how is it holding up to rusting, does it need reguar oiling and whatnot, or is it just a case of checking it every so often?

I've taken off the coating like that on my Izula and using this !

The HEST has been stripped since January, no rust so far.
I got a loooOoot of 1095 and 1075 blades. If you take care of them ? no problem !:)
Regular oiling is Olive oil, butter or sausage... YMMV.

Have you cut with it since?Looks really good !

Yes it cuts wood with ease and hairs like a caress.
It a pleasure whittling with it as the thick blade is great to push cuts with the other hand thumb.
The convex edge bits more deep in the wood.

(Since I saw that video of Ron and Karen Hood, I always wanted a little thick fixed blade with a great geometry !)

What knife was that? And what # video. I have most.

Re: your convexing and stripping - excellent job. I will be doing the same with my H.E.S.T.

Still want a H.E.S.T. with no bottle opener, though.

Doc

ETA, the little, thick fixed blade is what I love about the H.E.S.T.

Jeff had a great column in SWAT about carbon steels and rust, to paraphrase "a rusty knife will still cut"

It was a short Busse fixed blade used to notch some stick for trap building.
The bottle opener is great for catching things like a pot over the fire. I love it !
But also my thumb loves that ergonomy.
