I think this is whats called a gent's bowie. Correct me if I am not right.

Blade is 6" X 1 1/8" 1084 and 15N20 with a very random pattern around 400 layers. OAL 10 3/4 "
fittings are stainless and copper, handle is stag ivory.
comments please.

Very elegant Mike. Nice damascus pattern.
I like it very much.
IMO, Gent's Bowie is very appropriate.
This style has also been called a "Vest Bowie" as
in the past gentleman gamblers would carry such knives
concealed in their clothing. In spite of what's seen in
television and the movies, must saloons and gambling houses
of the 19th century didn't allow firearms for obvious reasons.
Probably why the fancy San Francisco style bowies became so popular.

Just a fun piece of possibly contrasting information - my girlfriend was at archaeological dig in Virginia City (Mark Twain comstock-era) for a few months last summer. I think they believed they were digging up a saloon with a shooting gallery connected out back!:)

Perhaps the shooting gallery out back made it easier to keep the firearms out of the front of the establishment. ;) :)
There were also towns where firearms were not allowed within the city limits.

Sorry Mike, to stray discussion from your fine Bowie.

Thanks Mike are you going to blade?

Joe
No: im not going to to blade, I think one of the reasons I will never get anywhere in the knife business is that I will probley never attend a knife show. As I said once before I just make what I want to make then if someone wants it thats great.

Mike

Mike I already think you are some where in the knife business and you are doing some great work. I hope one of these days we can meet in person bud.
