New to high-end knives... so here's my question. I will be graduating law school soon and want a nice (under $200) folder to carry with me (stuffy law firm so will be wearing suit every day) or keep in briefcase. 2 inch blade (if that sounds about right) with hole or stud for opening. No preferences for handle material or locking system.

Thanks in advance...JT

Here are some you might want to consider:
Spyderco Mouse
Spyderco D'Holder Toad
Benchmade 335 Big Spender

These are nice knives under 2 inches. If you don't mind carrying one under 3 inches, check out:
Benchmade 450 Park Ave Gent Folder
Boker Walker model 2076

Also, William Henry offers an exquisite line of gent folders that may be of interest. Check them out at www.williamhenryknives.com

CRKT has the Viele designed Wasp in two sizes. The smaller version has a blade under 3 inches and makes a nice gents folder.

Save yourself some cash and buy a Kershaw Chive. Just about a 2" blade, and very fast opening. I carry one everyday now regardless of where I am going. It opens just as fast as an auto, but is legal.

Under 2" is pretty small. If you're willing to stay under 3", you should check out the Benchmade 770. Axis lock with carbon fiber scales.

I'm with Schmakey! If you want something a little dressier, try a William Henry Lancet.

My two favorite knives in the two inch category are the Spyderco Mouse and the William Henry Kestrel. The Spyderco is sturdier and provides a better grip for work. The William Henry is much more graceful and attractive. The Mouse will cost you just under $100, the Kestrel can be had for under $200 if you look.

Congrats on graduating!

I think you'll find William Henry to make a great line of upscale knives at your required size. Also check out some Whitewings (maybe a little more, but I think they're worth it).

At your price point, though, it's always been my preference to spend just a little bit more and go into a handmade, especially if you're going to be in full dress. Plenty of makers are doing small folders in the $200-$300 range.

Consider also the BM 850. It's near custom in fit and finish and is rainbow anodized for slick looks and comes in a neat suede carry pouch.

Also, the William Henry Evolution series SO-5. Comes with a leather carry sheath with integral clip. Totally non-threatening.

Congrats on the law school graduation.

If I were buying, I'd probably opt for one of the new black/tan william henry carbon fibre lancets (2.6" blade) or kestrels (2.1" blade). Light, smooth, super craftsmanship. You won't even know its in your pocket.

Roger at Bayou Lafourche has them here: http://64.49.193.154/subcatmfgprod.asp?0=251&1=253&2=-1

Add my vote for the Benchmade 770. Ever since Spyderco discontinued the Micarta Dyad Jr., it has been my hands down favorite as a gent's pocket knife. Mark yoou, I have both.

My younger brother the Vulture, er, I mean Lawyer, keeps a WH CF Spearpoint in his breifcase.

The William Henry stuff is very nice for the money, and with wood or pearl handles, makes for a "nice" looking pocket knife, not so "tactical".

Fit & finish are excellent for the money, lockup pretty good, about 1/2 way to a custom for about 1/2 the price, more or less.

And they do have some 2.5" to 3" blades to look at.

The Small Sebenza exceeds your price target. You may find a used small at the $250 price point, but it'll be a plain, gray bead blasted titanium handle and will look a bit tactical although certainly small enough (and comes with a leather pouch) for daily carry in dress pants...small enough to be non-threatening. The wood Sebenza's cost some money ($400 to $550) and the computer graphic versions are in the $270 to $380 range depending on used vs. new.

The Reeve Umfaan is too small for me to be a practical, useful knife, but does meet your 2" criteria.

I like the looks of the:
Spyderco Toad
Spyderco Mouse
BM 330
BM 450
CRK Umfaan (awesome knife)
Good luck,
Matt

There's a NIB WH Kestral Carbon Fiber up for sale on eBay at much lower than list. It's not my sale but that of a very reliable and trusted forum member.

A nice WH Kestral for the pocket and a REKAT Sifu for the briefcase.

A Pat on the Back is only a few inches from a Kick in the Butt.

SOG Stingray with Cocobolo insert. Classy and thick sweet blade. But not an one hand opener.

BM770 is great .. and you will have an ambi knife.

Just in case you missed the subtle hints above, William Henry rules the affordable gent's knife market.

P.S. - Those recommending the black & tan Lancet have particularly fine taste

I bought a WH Kestrel in Fishtail Oak for daily carry in a very white-color office. I liked it very much, but like it better with the optional clip-case which keeps it right in the seam of the pants. I've since found that I can get away with much bigger knives without raising too many eyebrows and the Kestrel is seeing less pocket time. It is a very sweet little knife for carry in a suit pocket. I'm kind of hot for a lancet these days.
