Locking (back, liner, frame) pretty much anything
One hand opening (no autos or flippers) studs or holes or "lighter jimp" fine
pocket clip
looks gents not super tactical
2.75" min blade
thin is good
$250 max

I like some of the Mcustas, but cant ever tell which ones have a clip
Might die before I look at everything in AG Russel, so some shortcuts would help

Benchmade 470 Emissary is what I'd get. If you want to go a bit bigger there's the Spyderco Caly 3 in carbon fiber.

emissary a bit to tactical looking, I have tried to like the caly looks, but the small neck turns me off a bit

keep them coming

A lot cheaper but works just fine. And when you customize it a bit it looks very very sexy.

My dad has a Mcusta and loves it.

This has been my 'gentleman folder' for around 6 years, still going strong with maintenance, its the Buck Nobleman (They have a carbon fibre version now)
It cheap, under 40, all metal construction, yet lightweight. The blade holds its edge surprisingly well. This makes a good "backup" blade as well. I think mine was made of a different steel though, I don't know what they make the new ones out of now

I'd go for one of the A.G. Russel knives. Click on folding knives and scroll down. The Spire, which was originally a William Henry knife, would fit your specs and is nice looking to boot.

Kershaw Echelon: funky-looking, but that might be your style.
Spyderco Delica w/damascus blade and Ti handles: beautiful and classy little knife.
Benchmade 483 Shori: elegant Oriental-flavored EDC.

CRKT has a bunch of thin, sleek little folders, but I'm not too familiar with most of their designs.

update to requirements
stainless or nearly so
no assists axis included
kinda fancy handles

As far as modern goes, I'd say by the looks of it, Benchmade 710 is an absolute beauty (but is a bit big- I'll have to check in person because I have my mind set on buying one)...

But my ideal of a gent's folder is that it would not have lock or be suited to one hand opening- I have one, but it's really not a gent's folder. It's elegant and packs a lot of blade (too much, one could say), it's exactly like this one in pics, but with plain wood handles:

For the reference- it's about 11.5cm long when closed and I think could be gotten for about $30. (It's Miguel Nieto Navaja in AN.58 stainless steel.)

Edit: It doesn't have a lock, but it's a slipjoint with very firm lock-up in closed and open position.

forgot the memory, its pretty solid contender
the BM's are a bit tactical looking, so not as good, clip is mandatory

thanks to all for the ideas, keep em coming

Another advantage the Centofante Memory has is that the Spydie hole is tempered. It's a very nice-looking gentleman's folder and exudes quality.

William Henry has a nice line of EDC Gentleman's folders E6 & E10 with 2.75" and 3.25" blade lengths respectively. I have the EDC E10-3 and it's very nice-looking and light. However, the prices may be a tad over your limits.

+ 1 on the William Henry edc knives. You can find them lightly used for under your price limit. Very light, D2 steel, button lock. Super nice little knives.
Something to think about also...... Be patient with the exchange or save a little more and get a mnandi. Perfect work knife!

the bill henrys are pretty good, but all of the e6 models i have seen are all black, handle and blade, looks like the e10 can be had with white inlays and shiny blade, so that might work
