Found this today at a local thrift store at a favorable price. Totally loose on the handle, but that was OK as PO had drilled the side of the blade and installed a sheet metal screw!

Am curious what the original weight and dimensions might be as I try to figure out how much I can sharpen it.

Weights 1lb 9.5 oz
Across the top is 6-3/8"
Across the blade is 3-3/4"
The "G" in Genuine lines up over the "r" in Norlund
The vertical part of the "E"in Genuine lines up with the stem in"d" from Norlund

How on earth did the PO manage to crack/split the eye where the sheet metal screw went in? You'll want to get that welded up because the eyes on Hudson Bays are pretty short to begin with.

Does not appear to be a crack - more of a significant gouge - I need to take a closer look at it

I think that you have pretty much all of the bit left on that axe. It looks to me like very little has been sharpened away.

Here's my Norlund of the same size for comparison.

You may already know this, but your axe is the version that Norlund marketed as the Tomahawk. It is the next-to-the-smallest of the Norlund Hudson Bays. Here's a comparison shot of my Norlund Tomahawk with the smallest Norlund Hudson Bay, which is known as the Voyageur.

Mine, which I'm pretty sure was re-hung on its original handle, is just under 26 inches overall length. For comparison, the Voyageur is 12 inches OAL.

A 28" handle would work well (and would finish out at about 26 inches like mine), but a 24" would be a really nice size to use for your project.

Hope this helps, and good luck with your project.

Got by the house at lunch - took a few pictures - think there is a crack - and I suspect the hole was originally drilled to stop the crack.

Will probably get it welded - and advice?

Thanks Chris - I am looking forward to getting this repaired and cleaned up. I had one of the larger ones that Joanne had found years ago that I was able to rehang on the original handle, but was stolen from the truck at MY house after decades at hers!

I'm not replying to this topic, but have a question of my own. I buy many sm. Norlund hatchets. Recently I've acquired 2 with a blue/green metallic paint. Several others with traces of the same paint. Reminds me of the Montgomery Wards metallic turquoise chain saw color. Yes Im that old. All are on the Norlund only stamp. The poll is of the earlier version. More squared, as the later versions seem to have a more rounded/beveled poll. Does anyone have any history to this color?
Also, I have an unusual sheath marked Voyageur. This is in the buckle version of the small hatchet sheath. I have dozens of buckle and leather tie sheaths. Genuine Norlund, round seal and canoe. Recently found sheaths stamped Voyageur. Has anyone seen this Voyageur stamped sheath? Thanks, Tom
