Geo-Caching-Is this worth it?

It seems like a pretty cool idea and would be a good way to get into Geocaching while not spending a ton of money. I'd think you'd also need to either A) know the location you are in very well or B)be able to safely and accurately navigate by a different means other than that device. It appears to be the same as that Backtrack device where it points in the direction you need to go regardless of what obstacles are in your way (river, cliff, etc). That being said, it seems like a pretty cool little device for the money.

I guess I should have put a little more information in my intial post. Somewhere, deep in the BF archives, is a post where I talked about my degree and that I am going to school to be a youth pastor. I also talked about wanting to be able to focus more on teaching kids some outdoor stuff in a fun environment while maintaining Christian principle and ideals...

I thought that Geo-Caching would be yet another way to work on map and nav skills that might be a little more entertaining than simply following points on a map.

I think it would be a great way to get kids involved in the outdoors and a perfect segway into teaching land nav with map and compass. It'll spark the initial interest and hopefully start the ball rolling.

Excellent idea! Get them out to see what He so kindly has given us to enjoy.

You can pick up a basic Garmin etrex for the same price and that would be more useful. My opinion. Then again, I don't really enjoy geocache much. I understand the culture around it, but its not my thing. More fun to do with kids.

seems like a cool price.. though Ken is right (again) i would probably go with the Garmin etrex too... they seem a little versatile...

i have been thinking about geting into geocaching too, i think my kids would love it..:) there is a ton of them nearby...

well it got a good review and I say for 70 bucks it's definately worth trying. When I was a teen ager, my favorite church activities were the outdoorsy things.( Go figure huh, someone on here liking the outdoors) Back then geocaching wasn't going on ( or at least I had never heard of it) but we did get to hike in and help cache gear for the youth group leader's multi week hunting trips. I thought it was pretty fun so I think the geocaching thing would be fun too.

Maybe you could get the group to make some kind of maker with the church and groups name on it to leave in each one you find, or maybe a small New Testament.

My wife and I just got into geocaching and really like it.

Here is my two cents on this unit, I think I would buy one of the etrex's mentioned. I didn't look at the upgrade kit for the one you posted, but my guess is by the time you bought it for the new caches, you would have almost the same money wrapped up.

If I were going to take a group of kids out and teach them how to use a gps, I would contact your local geo caching organizatio and see if they would hold a class for you. I know that my local group has several "loaner units" so that they can let newbies try it out.

Check out geocacer University for some good information.

I think geocaching would be great for a youth group (I'm a youthgroup leader and I'm gonna see what sort of interest there is in geocaching at our next meeting).

That being said, you can get a garmin etrex or better for about the same price. Check the popular auction site as well, I got an etrex-H (higher detection chip or some such) for 40 dollars.

As far as combining traditional land nav with geocaching, one option would be to plot the cache on a topo map and then use compass/etc to get close at which point you could flip on the gps to guide you the rest of the way.

Like others said, an Etrex would be a better deal, IMO. As to using a map and compass, it would get you pretty close in the general area, but there is no way you would ever find some of the caches I've seen without a very accurate GPS.

I would say that it wouldn't be worth the money. get a garmin etrex. I have found thousands of geocaches with mine.

I want to get into it with my girlfriend.

If you have a Blackberry, There is an "App" called Geocaching Navigator. You have to pay monthly for it but it is awesome for Geocaching. You can download cache coordinates right to your phone on the fly and it makes paperless geocaching a breeze. I would buy for my girlfriends Blackberry but the "App" doesn't work for the Tour model on Verizon as of now.

Around Xmas if the App still doesn't work for her particular model I might just plop down and purchase a GPSr like a garmin or something.

She loves to hike with me but geocaching would hopefully just add to the fun. I think it would be excellent for kids too for what its worth.

Amen! good to see more stuff life this nowadays!

Excellent idea for getting kids interested. You might also consider adding in metal locating. I've gotten several kids into the hobby of swinging metal detectors back and forth out in the boonies and even a little find becomes a major event.

i am going to be another one who says go with the Etrex, Geacaching is a constantly changing thing with caches being stopped, moved or altered daily, and new ones added all the time, I dont see how this thing could keep up.

Get a regular GPS, you can do so many more things.
