i am getting a custom fixed blade and having a inside the waist sheath made. if i tuck my shirt in with the knife handle on the oustside is that still considered concealed? and one know the max size of a concealed fix blade in georgia?:D

4" for a concealed blade. For unconcealed, no limit is stated. If the knife handle is exposed, the knife is not concealed.

I live in Ga.

I live in villa Rica,Ga.Does the same thing apply to a fixed blade strapped to my side? And is it legal to carry?

It is legal to carry anywhere that is not considered a 'public gathering'. This term is vague enough that I don't carry my fixed blade anywhere in town.

16-11-126.
(a) A person commits the offense of carrying a concealed weapon when such person knowingly has or carries about his or her person, unless in an open manner and fully exposed to view, any bludgeon, metal knuckles, firearm, knife designed for the purpose of offense and defense, or any other dangerous or deadly weapon or instrument of like character outside of his or her home or place of business, except as permitted under this Code section.

16-11-127.
(a) Except as provided in Code Section 16-11-127.1, a person is guilty of a misdemeanor when he or she carries to or while at a public gathering any explosive compound, firearm, or knife designed for the purpose of offense and defense.
(b) For the purpose of this Code section, 'public gathering' shall include, but shall not be limited to, athletic or sporting events, churches or church functions, political rallies or functions, publicly owned or operated buildings, or establishments at which alcoholic beverages are sold for consumption on the premises.

(d) It is an affirmative defense to a violation of this Code section if a person notifies a law enforcement officer or other person employed to provide security for a public gathering of the presence of such item as soon as possible after learning of its presence and surrenders or secures such item as directed by the law enforcement officer or other person employed to provide security for a public gathering.

Also, each city and county has it's own laws. In Atlanta, any blade over 3" that locks open by any means is illegal.

Hi - just interested where you get the 4" rule for GA. The only thing I've seen in the GA Code has that very vague language about a "knife designed for the purpose of offense and defense."

Thanks.

I believe that chp5 is right. I only visit GA (relatives) but did read the state code book and although "offense and defence" seems very open, that is the only defination I could find as well.

I used to live in Washington, GA (about 2 hours east of Atlanta, between Augusta and Athens) about 4 years ago, and carried various fixed blade knives on my belt (NOT at the same time:D) everywhere(except school) with my shirt tucked in, and was never hasseled by the police for it. One of the knives was even a full sized USMC Ka-Bar. Heck, my friend used to sometimes carry his machete around openly in town (when we were walking to the woods just on the edge of town) and the cops never bothered him. However, the attitudes of the police in your town might differ, so this shouldn't be construed as legal advice. BTW, I live in Illinois now, where I lived for most of my childhood.

^ What are the chances...I grew up in Georgia, and ended up going to college & getting my first job here in IL. I miss the South...

I was about to toss in the obligatory Atlanta exception, but I see someone already did. I get to hear about it every other day from my brother who's at Georgia Tech (step off campus and you're in the ghetto, but God forbid you carry ANYTHING that could possibly be used to fend off thugs).

Be careful about the concealed thing. Many jusridictions have laws that say totally or PARTIALLY concealed.

Wait a minute, isn't GA Tech in Athens? Because my family and I used to visit Athens, and I'm pretty sure we drove by Georgia Tech more than once. I could be mistaken, though.

GA Tech is in ATL. U of GA is in Athens.

Students are reguarly robbed off campus at Ga Tech. Bad area.

As stated by Gigmaster, the city of ATL has an ordenance that prohibits carrying anything greater than a 3" blade. I live north of the city, but go into the city reguarly.

I EDC a Delica for that reason - along with a Glock 23 :D

Also, the GA concealed permit is a FIREARMS permit and does not apply to knives. Go figure . . . So theoretically, you could legally carry a Glock but be arrested for carrying a knife at the same time!

Here's the applicable section of the GA Code:
