I just ordered a new Gerber A-F Covert (5785). This is my first Gerber knife. I have never seen an A-F Covert in person, I just LOVE the way they look. Since the search engine is down, can anyone give me any thoughts on this knife? Thanks!

bear123,

This is a great knife. I thought for a long time about buying one, from pictures I'd seen then ended up trading into one. I really like the feel, and the action is smooth. It is definitely a "tactical" looking knife, but works great for all around use.

I would prefer a plain edged blade on this knife, but the part serrated blade on this model is OK too, and quite versatile.

Enjoy your new knife.

I have a Gerber A/F Covert that I bought off E-bay some time back. It's a great little knife. I have the one with the double false edge in ATS-24 steel. It has solid lock up with it's liner lock and the extra lock (can't remember its name).

The knife sits very low in your pocket for a low profile carry.

Great little knife

I have A/F combat folder, A/F Covert and the mini-Covert, all good knives the mini doesn't scare the sheeple as much as the other two.Just wish I could get the two edged version of the combat folder here but were not allowed!!!!!

I had a Covert which I liked a lot, but then all the screws started falling out, so you should loc-tite them. Then I put it through some hard use on camping trips and it just loosened up way too much, & I gave it away. So I would avoid too much torque on the pivot area.

Anyone have any experience with the Harsey X-frame. I was also looking at the Mini Covert...

I've got a Fairbaine Covert, and I love it. It's my current "truck knife" I use for random slicing. For the price, it's wonderfully tough, and very well-built. In fact, it's due for a good cleaning, as it was so relatively inexpensive, and rarely ever leaves my truck, I don't give it the same care I give to my "Collection."

So yes, it's so tough and worry-free that it can stand to be beat around, and still be good to go. The LAWKS system is top-notch, as well. Very nice knife, you should be happy with it for years.

I had a Covert, nice little knife. It seemed to "scare" alot of non knife people because of it's dagger like look. I liked the addition of the extra locking mechanism that made sure it wouldn't close on you accidentaly. I kinda fell out of love with it when my grip slipped up and got the serrations into my thumb. I ended up giving it to one of my cousins. It is however, a good knife for the price if you can find it on Ebay or used here on the forums.

I also have one of these knives. It seems to be good for the money. I do notice a bit of handle twisting, under hard use, which can cause the liner lock to continue all the way across. This caused the lock eventually to need fixing. Gerber just replaced the knife.

The blade shape fits all the way into the handle, when folded, so I sharpened the false edge and made it a true double edged folder. Very cool.

Thanks for the info! I have over 20 Spyderco knives and have never owned a Gerber before. As I said above, I have always loved the way the A-F looks. I Can't wait till UPS delievers it on Friday.

Mine is a piece of crap. Screws fell out, detent ball fell out, linerlock goes all the way over. Been meaning to send it back to Gerber for a long time now, just never seem to get around to it.

Harry, you just reminded me, a screw fell out of the back end on the clip side of the handle. As a plus though, I called CS at Gerber and they sent me a bag full of those little screws, so you can have that particular problem remedied. As far as the other problems go, send it back, they'll probably send you a new knife (based on the experiences I've had with Gerber replacements/fix).
