Well, since no one else seems to own both, guess I hafta scribble a comparison...
Actually, I have four: a Gerber Covert (3.5" blade), Gerber Combat (4.5" blade), SOG Pentagon Elite (3.9" blade), and SOG Pentagon Elite II (5" blade). My thoughts on each:
Gerber A-F Covert: This is the pick of the litter, to me. Classic Applegate-Faribairn lines. Fits my smallish hands perfectly; the liners are set into the rounded scales, for a *very* slim grip overall. The grip is a tad smooth, however; it really should have more texture. The blade size is a little small for a SD knife, but sharp as Hell and very nimble. The LAWKS safety is sweet; it engages almost automatically, but can be tricky to disengage if you're wearing gloves. Sits *very* low in the pocket on it's built-in, reversible clip; which is good, because the dagger-like blade can scare the more sensitive sheeple, but the overall small size means you can use it witout being too obvious about it. Mine has the bayonet-style blade grind, which is nice and stout, but not ethe best for utility use; I've seen some that are fully-ground, which should make them better slicers, at the expense of some tip strength.
Gerber A-F Combat: First of all, many owners report less-then-positive lockup. Bad Gerber, BAD!! Mine is a good one; it's marked "First Production Run", so perhaps Gerber's quality has slipped. The longer blade gives more reach, but it's also ground to be more tip-heavy than the Covert. Same good grip ergonomics as the Covert, just bigger, and just as slick; however, the lack of a pocket clip limits it to belt-sheath duty. It also lacks the LAWKS safety, which is unfortunate given the lock-up issues already mentioned. *Definitely* not sheeple-friendly, either; it's too big to use discreetly.
SOG Pentagon Elite I: IMHO the ideal size of the lot, with it's four-inch blade. SImilar blade shape to the Combat, with a definite tip-heavy grind; SOG's extra "wedge grind" at the tip might make it less prone to tip breakage, but it also makes it difficult to use the tip for fine pickin' work. Grip is oddly bag-shaped, but ergonomics are excellent in all grips, and it's well textured. Overall, though, the PE looks a bit awkward compared to the A-F; SOG's version of the Axis lock requires a large gap at the bottom of the tang, which makes the blade look a bit delicate; the stock is plenty thick, though, and so the blade's no doubt plenty stout in Real World usage. And that Axis-like lock is both secure and smooth, compared to the Gerbers' liner locks. Looks too mean to use around sheeple, though. Overall, my second pick of the litter.
SOG Pentagon Elite II: First impression is: this thing's *big*! It's pretty much just the PE I scaled up 125%, with all the plusses and minuses listed above, but bulkier and slower in usage Like the COmbat vs. the COvert, the blade is ground to put more weight out at the tip. Oh, and this one might give sheeple apoplexy! Personally, I've always thought of the A-F design as a nice covert sticker, but this one is about as discreet as a Ka-Bar. Fit and finish are superb, of course, but DAY-um, it's a handful. Seems to me, if you need something this big, just carry a fixed blade! Of course, if you have very big hands, the PE II might be just what you need; YMMV!
In my case, having tried all four, I'm keeping the first three, carrying the Covert most often, and selling the PE II one of these days.
