HI KC SLIM!!!

I have the Covert folder. It is a very nicely-made piece. Mine has the secondary safety built in to the area where your thumb would tend to fall, so it's use is very natural.

The clip is reversible, and with dual thumbstuds, it is completely ambidextrous.

It is also very comfortable to carry due to it's smooth contours.

Good luck.

I also have one of the Coverts. It is a nicely made knife. I had one problem with the liner lock. After very little use the lock began to move all the way across the tang when the blade was open. I sent it back and the sent me a brand new knife. Their customer service dept was great.

The satin finish blade Covert is now being closed out and you can find them being offered at some very very low prices.

I have one of the originals without safety. Just one liner and liner lock. As a "tactical", it is a downright dangerous p.o.s.
If you use it, treat it as if it has no lock whatsoever. That's usually sound advice for any folder, except a "tactical" folder supposedly capable of using the top edge for backslashing techniques etc.
I wouldn't bother with that knife at all, unless you get a custom version, which is available, or, as I said, act as if it has no lock at all.

I have both the Covert and Full Size versions of the A/F Folder. The Covert was my daily carry until I switched to tip up carry. The lockup on the full size always seemed plenty solid to me. I have heard lots of stories of it failing, but I have never seen it. So far as I am concerned, it may be just another myth because someone got a dud liner lock one time. I think both folders have great lines and I still use the Covert (desk drawer knife - my Full Size sits with its Fixed Blade buddy on a plaque on the wall).

I have talked with Applegate's nephew and he has never experienced any failure problems with his Full Size folder.

My full size is still rock solid after a couple of years, and it's been easy to keep sharp. I feel that it is still a great value, especially at current street prices.

Ala, I'm glad your lock is solid.
Killer, it ain't no myth. I'm not the only one with the same experience. Maybe the later runs were better.

got a late model covert, and, while its ok, its certainly nothing to write home to mom about - its ok if the price is right - i think i paid $50 for mine second hand, but very lightly used - no probs with it, just not crazy about the looks - its ok....

I don't know if the current production models have improved, but I owned 3, the full sized Combat folder and 2 Coverts. I really liked the design and the feel of the knife, however, I would have prefered a higher quality steel instead of the 425 Modified stainless Gerber uses on the Applegate Combat folder.

Of the 2 Coverts I owned, I preferred the flat ground ATS-34 blade since it was sharper than the double ground version, however, it was one of the 1st Gen models that had the safety switch on the side of the handle. The other one was the double ground ATS-34 version with the Lake & Walker safety on the thumb rest area of the handle.

My biggest gripe on the Gerber Applegates (both Combat & Covert) is that when closed, the edge makes contact with the handle. Look into the handle and I'll bet you see the nick marks in the plastic.

I had the full size that I bought back in 97. It was rock solid, no defects whatsoever.
I used it for everyday carry out in the field and what not. The only problem I found later on was rust that developed under the scales when I took it apart. Then again I used it under some extreme conditions.
But unfortunately last year when my unit went to Ft. Polk someone seemed to want it more than I did and never saw it again. This was a MEAN Mother of a knife that always got the "OH S***" looks when I pulled it out.
I paid $60 for it back then. Now I think the price is $80 or so.

I have the full size. i thought it was solid as a bank vault till i performed a moderate spine whack. it failed miserably. Also, the sheath fell apart in about a month. A cool looking knife, but personally, I would look elsewhere.

The large Applegate was the most notorious lock slipper on record, I believe. The Covert is a great knife. Amazingly versatile as a utility knife, very solid, and the lock safety makes it very reliable. One of my favorite knives.
