All,

Has there ever been something called the Australian Bowie in the Gerber line up? I read a reference to that, admitedly in a SF novel, and I was wondering.

Hi!

I know of what bowie you mean.It was called "Gerber Utility Bowie" when i baught it. It is a good looking knife, and it was rather inexpencive when i baught it to. I have the standard version with a smooth rubber grip. It was also made a special version with a wood handle. Sadly, the bowie was of poor quality. After just light chopping the brass guard got loose, and the tang inside of the handle got loose as well.

I sended it back to Gerber who replaced it with a new one,but the same thing happened again! This bowie also got a loose guard and a loose tang. I sended it back to Gerber, but this time i payed a small difference and got a Gerber BMF bowie/survival knife instead(now discontinued). This time i got a good bowie. It has never got loose in anyway, and it has remained undamaged for years of use

I don´t know if the entirely charge of bowies was of poor quality, if i was unlucky to get the poor ones or if the knife was simply poored designed. That´s my experiences of the Gerber Utility bowies,so therefore i can´t recomend them.

Manowar:)

I'm not sure this is the same thing - after all, utility doesn't sound like Australian at all. I have a BMF too and like it. They go for crazy amounts on eBay these days.

Nice band!:D

It was listed as the "Aussie Bowie" for a time during the Dundee craze. It is the same knife under either name.
