Got the med sized model, looks good!

However... Why is it covered with a resin like substance? Rust protection? Weeeelll I can see rust under it and it is doing my nut in! Any easy ways to rid myself of this resin like stuff? I have tried scraping it and cutting it and filing it... it is tough!

I have the same model, and I wouldn't scrape it off if I were you, unless you have something better to replace it with. There are tiny little rust spots under the coating, but they are very tiny, and they haven't grown on mine for the past 6 months. The coating will wear away at the edge, exposing the steel and allowing you to sharpen it to a shaving level greater than most knives. The steel also rusts very easily where it is exposed, so that is why I would not suggest removing all the coating. But don't worry about rust on the edge if you use the axe on a regualar basis. There is no need to treat the edge with rust protectant since chopping though tough wood does a pretty good job of scraping off the oxidized surface of the axe edge. Sharpening after a few hours of chopping also renews the edge. I have never used any protectant on my axe, and the edge has stained black and purple after hours off cutting down plants. The stain can't be washed off with water either, but once I go out and chop some dry hard wood, the edge gets polished to a silver finish again.

Mine is an older one (the largest one) that has seen a good bit of use.
The only place it is rusted is where there are some deep scratches in the finish-probably from hitting rocks when I was chopping up some roots awhile back. You can feel the rust, so it's not under the finish.
Mine has stained somewhat and a has a kind of "mottled patina" look.
Glad you brought it up, 'cause I got mine out, and it looks like a little sharpening is in order.
Like generallobster said, you can get an incredibly sharp edge if you want to.

Hey Guys...

I picked up the Fiskers version of the Camp Axe a few months back at nearly 1/2 the price in Meijers... Look in the tool section where they keep the chain saw stuff...

Gerber Sport Axe $35.00USD
Fiskers Axe $17.99USD

Same Exact axe,, except for the handle on mine is orange at the end and the sheath or cap is different.

Talk about sharp.. yikes.. After a little work on the stone,, I can shave with it Easily...

18 dollars is a really good price for what this axe can do. I haven't used a lighter, more powerful axe in my entire life. Since the handle has almost no weight, all the weight is concentrated where it is most useful. You can also generate lots of head speed without tiring your arm. Great deal if you can find them for 18 dollars.

Crap, I have to be more carful with my words. But it's true, you can whip the head, uh, I mean axe around really fast all day without getting tired. Gloves help though, because the grip gets slippery after a while. I'm going to end this here because this is not going where I want it to.

You seem to know a lot about tools and whacking wood, lobster. You're quite the lumberjack as well?

Back to the topic. I used some varnish remover on the 'resin' it bubbled away nicely. I then used a 1200 grit wet and dry paper with 3 in 1 as a lube. The axe now has a lovely 'grain' showing and it looks the dogs you know whats!

. I then sharpened it using the fine stones on a 203 and wow this baby shaves!

I might add that the steel on the axe looks stunning done this way. I highly advise anyone to do the same, it has a great grain structure and a coat of MS Tuf Cote protects it well.

Hope it helps in some small way
