Anyone have any knowledge or info on old production Gerber knives? Got to figure some on the forum can edjumacate me on this little beauty.

I just got a Gerber Bird & Trout knife Model 05501 I was lucky enough to come across recently. Knife and Sheath are in new unused condition and it still had the box as well. This is the knife that got me into bird & trout knives in the first place. I remember seeing the ads in Field and Stream and other mags. I'm pretty sure this was back in the '70's. Unfortunately I couldn't afford one of these when I was 12. So I never got one when it was in production.

Long story made short, I would love to get any info on this knife from anyone here. I contacted Gerber directly, they had (or would provide) zero info on the knife. Various google searches have yielded nothing.

Can anyone tell me what steel this knife was made out of? What was the HRC? What was the handle made out of? (I think Aluminum but not positive. What ever it was they seem to have dipped in their "armorhide" coating) Was the blade full tang? What years was this knife in production? This is what happens when collector data mania collides with missing data points. lol

Can't help you with the data other than to tell you they used 440C on their knives in the 70's to mid 80's. They sold the company to Fiskars in 1986 the the top shelf Gerber quality when out the window after that. You might try contacting the folks at All About Pocket Knives - they sell a lot of nice vintage Gerber & Puma knives and appear to be knowledgeable on both companies.
