I was looking around a store last night and found the Bear Grylls display and low and behold I found what I think was a slipjoint. It's got a blade, a punch, a flathead and phillips screwdriver in it. Reminds me of a Grylls Swiss Army Knife. Anyone else seen on of these? Anyone have one?

A Bear Grylls slip joint? I'm not certain I could bear the thought of such a thing in my pocket. Icky.

Not a traditional by any means, way, shape or form. It is a small, folding mulitool that is as ugly as a mud fence. The big green jungle site has them for $10. Nasty.

Bear Grylls Pocket Tool
An updated classic, the Pocket Tool is a modern interpretation of the traditional, minimal multitool. The basic components - large fine-edgeblade, bottle opener, Phillips head driver, small and medium flat driver – are housed within a tough rubberized handle, perfect for gripping in the elements, with or without gloves on.
Overall Length: 5.5" Closed Length: 3.2" Weight: 2.9 oz. Steel Type: 5Cr15 Stainless

No Thanks.

Pseudo-traditional.

Victorinox/Wegner has had the camper pattern market all to themselves for quite a while. Don't like the Gerber? Blame Case, Buck and other US makers for failing to figure out a way to bring the camper pattern out of the 1930s and into current times in a relevant manner.

Are there any scout models in production by Case, Buck, etc? It seems like they completely ceeded the market to Vic and the knock offs.

Case makes a Junior Scout. I think its a traditional camper pattern but smaller. Other than that, I think Ontario makes a camp knife too. Its like an overbuilt (and not up-to-date) Vic Pioneer.

Edit: I bought a Bear Grylls Scout folder. Returned it the same day. I guess if you need a cheap light/medium use knife for playing around, it is actually a good option. Really its not as terrible as most people around here think. I just decided I didn't need it and it was a waste of $20 (in my case). That being said, I'll never buy a Bear Grylls knife again. Just get a Vic Pioneer.

The Gerber/bear knives seem to bev built to the level of MdDonalds Happy Meal toys. I don't anticipate ever trying one.

I think Case has recently made a scout pattern. Very traditional.

In the ?90s?, Buck did a collaboration with Wegner called "SwissBuck". Here is one...

Buck currently makes the (imported) Xtract series.

As a fan of Buck knives, I'm of 2 minds. Sort of interesting concept but it doesn't say "Buck" to me. General complaint I have about many of Bucks offerings. Sort of wondering in the woods, looking for an identity.

Like I said, I don't think either Case or Buck figured this out and I agree with you, they've conceded the space to Victorinox (who deserves some competition.

Case currently makes a Jr. Scout:

I wish they would bring back their classic Scout design with the old fashioned can opener again. Rough Rider makes one like that, isn't a bad knife, we gave away a couple last Christmas to Scouts and they haven't broken them.

Another one of my Scouts has a Bear Grylls Gerber lockback, he's happy with it but I had expected a little more. I guess it's better than a gas station folder that some of my other Scouts have though...

I just checked the Case Scout Jr offerings...holy $$...$70-80 for a scout pattern? I guess they're catering to collectors and not scouts. Case makes some great knives, but this makes no sense to me.

I work in a knife shop. Had someone ask me about a 'survival' knife (many things to many different people). I showed him some Bark River knives, some RATS and stuff. Good, solid knives. Then he saw the lone Grylls knife we had. Hey, he wondered, why didn't you show me that, it's just what I want. Well, said I. I don't consider it a real knife.

Heh, yeah, Case doesn't really sell their Scout knives to Boy Scouts but plenty of leaders I know carry them. Most of my Scouts carry either VSA, Wenger or cheapo lockbacks. I've told their parents it would be better for them to carry a Vic than some of that garbage they get at the counter of the dollar store :thumbdn:
Opinel is an official supplier to European Scouts, wish the BSA would bring them in.

The more I look at this knife - the less I like it. This Bear Grylls is really not my beer... No - never ....

It looks very bulky and not very pocket friendly. Next the handle ... just strange in my eyes...

I'm sorry, but I laugh myself to tears every single time I see the picture, it's too much. :highly_amused:

Gerber, it's time to stop.
