Hey guys, I know that there already is a Gerber BG fixed blade with the paracord handle but what I'm wondering is if anyone has taken the Gerber BG Ultimate Compact Fixed Blade and paracorded that. The reason I'm asking is b/c I love the sheath on the Compact Fixed Blade but I really want the paracord handle b/c I'm going to be using this knife for my hiking/outdoors pack and I want to be able to strap it to my backpack strap rather than have it on my belt like the BG Paracord Knife sheath. So has anyone popped off the Handle of the Compact Fixed Blade and wrapped it before?

Prob wont get many answers on this. Most stay away from Gerber. I have some & love em. Also have/had some that SUCK bigtime. Sounds like you may also like the BK&T BK11 or BK14. You can put a KaBar TDI clip on the sheath if you want & also handles on the knife if you ever decide that para-cord handle has to go. Lots of options with these. Me, I LIKE options !!! LOL :D

Hope this helps you in some way. I own both of these & they are awesome blades. I have even batoned with them. BK&T/KaBar :thumbup:

You can try it, and if it doesn't work you can just throw it away :D Also, consider the ESEE Izula or Izula II.

I've dabbled in the BK11 and 14s but they were both a little too small for my liking. Both of the BG knives have a nice handle length of 4+" which is perfect for my hand. While I was in class today I thought of just making a paracord bracelet to loop thru the belt clip of the BG Paracord sheath so I think that's what I'm going to do. I'm not an expert on knives, but from what I've read, the Gerber BG Surival series are pretty decent for the price you pay. $29 on Amazon for the BG Paracord, but if you guys can find me something else around the same dimensions I'll check it out.

@TwinStick: Can the handles pop off so I can paracord it? The reason I want one of those BG Knives is so I can throw it on my hiking pack to be used for anything really. Preferably, I'd like a full tang, tanto or drop point, hard sheath, and most importantly, I can paracord the handle or sheath. As of now, I think I'm going to settle for the BG Paracord knife b/c I can clearly paracord the handle, and I can throw in some more paracord on it b/c I'm going to use paracord to secure the sheath to my backpack strap thru the belt loop that it comes with. Thanks a plenty guys, still open for seeing more knives that you guys know of. I'm a huge fan of skeletonized handles so that I can paracord it (I really like the feel of paracord grip), so if you guys see any survival/hunting fixed blades with skeletonized handles, feel free to share!

A Mora will cut circles around any Gerber, and if you really care that much about paracord you can do the sheath. Plus you can get two Moras for $29.

Get one and find out. It won't break the bank. :)
You need to check out Daniel Fairly's Backpackers though.

Search "Mora" on Amazon and buy the first one that comes up :) best $15 you'll ever spend

Get what YOU want. No skin off my back. Let us know how it works. Hope it holds up better than my daughters BG knife though !!! LOL She had hers 5 minutes & bent the tip while removing it from the log after our stab penetration test. I then handed her my BK2 (which is what i suggested she buy) & told her to do exactly what she did with her BG. She did, over & over & over, with no damage. Then, i pounded it into the log & put all my weight (210) on the tip & pryed it out, with no damage. She learned the hard way. Know your knifes limits & stay within it. Should be fine for light duty. I have a Gerber Metolius fixed blade that i absolutely love. Scalpel sharp & VERY eronomic & grippy. I would never ever pry with it though.

The BK2 is actually one of the knives that is on my "Get Before I Die" list but $60 for a knife that is just going on a hiking pack is a little much. Note I'm not going out for days but just about A DAY. I'm sure Moras are great knives but they just aren't clicking with me. Any opinions on CRKT? I found a CRKT for just shy of $30 bucks, the CRKT Kommer Free Range. Looking back at the Condors, I'm interested in the Bushcraft Basic 4" but there is no room at all for paracord :( Not on the handle, nor the sheath since it's leather.

Since paracord seems to be an important item to you, perhaps just have a bundle of it in your pack, or maybe make a belt?

Posts like this makes me feel like I HAVE to give them a shot. You Mora fans have convinced me. I just ordered the companion heavy duty.

I thought it would be stupid. I thought I would never find a remotely acceptable knife for under $20. I would never have bought one, then my girlfriend got me one for christmas. When I get done sharpening my Spydercos and Benchmades, I do a cut test side by side with the Mora to see if I can even get my ~$100 knives as sharp as the factory edge on my Mora. I cut my girlfriend's shampoo bottles in half with the Mora when I get bored (you wouldn't believe how fast she goes through shampoo). It hasn't dulled in the slightest.

@ bpeezer: Which Mora do you have? You seem to standby them confidently so maybe you can recommend one to me? (not trying to sound snarky, as I said before they just don't really click with me)
@ Half Cut Skele: I've resorted to just making a paracord bracelet and clipped it onto my backpack strap for whenever I need it.
@ Blame it on god: I guess I'll have to follow your example as well :P

PS: I have no idea how to multi-quote so forgive me for my poor formatting :(

Not that I'm rich by any means, But what's $15 bucks for a knife?! (usually junk) But, I hear so much good about them I'll get over my knife snobbery and try them out. If nothing else it gives me something to tinker with.

if you want to spend twice as much on a knife half as good, sure.

I like the Mora 711 myself. the clipper is also a classic.
