had the day off work so i took a few of my fixed blades out and played with them to compare and see what each one was better at, and during this i decided to beat on the bear grylles ultimate fixed blade to see if it's really as bad as everyone says. so, first off i did some fire prep and fuzz sticks, dug some notches for traps and as a basic knife, it works fine. it may not hold the best edge in the world but it spent the better part of an afternoon notching dirty wood and scraping a magnesium block and ferro rod and would still cut so i'm not gonna complain a whole lot for a knife i paid $45 for. the cut out on the spine threw a lot of sparks and within 3 scrapes we had a fire going so i'll call that servicable as well.

then after we had cooked up lunch and were satisfied it would make an acceptable knife it was time to ruin it in the name of science (caveat: i'm no scientist). First came a few prying/levering chores i'd call abuse and although the knife didn't break when stabbing it into a stump and levering it out, it did take a pretty good bend after my 200lb carcass used it as a stepping platform. *it was hammered into the tree about an inch and a half.

then i wanted to see if the handle would explode like half the internet would have you believe when you tried to use the hammer on the butt. I decided to use 20 full force hammer smashes straight onto the face of the hammer, and when that didn't damage the handle, i held the blade in my hand and did another 20 blows on the side of the hammer to see if it would break. I did this all without gloves to simulate swinging as hard as you would feel comfortable with, and no real issues there either. Since this didn't seem to cause any real damage either, i hit it off angle with a 2 1/2" hardwood stick i was using to baton and the hammer end snapped clean off. although it did break, it definitely held up longer than most of the gerber haters would have you believe and the remaining portion of the handle is about as long as a SOG seal pup and was still pretty usable.

All in all i'd say it would suffice if someone wanted to use it sensibly as a knife in light to medium chores or to get them out of a pinch if that's all they had... Ultimate knife? not by a long shot, and it wouldn't be my primary choice as a survival knife but it is a decent value for the price i paid at least and i wouldn't feel like i was going to die alone if it was all i had with me.

I bought the Ultimate Survival Pro and I was quite impressed with it, though I didn't do too much work with it. It batoned just fine (I don't even baton my other knives) and made feathersticks with ease. I didn't like the choil and I didn't really need another knife in that range so I sold it off. Not the best out there, but definitely not as bad as people say it is.

i agree. even the ultimate fixed blade was all the knife anyone would need for most situations up to and including medium abuse. I did beat on it pretty hard and the blade did bend a fair bit with my fat carcass bouncing on it... but it didnt break and i turned it over and bent it back pretty straight and it continued working just fine and it took a considerable amount of hitting just fine before i started trying to break it on purpose. like i stated, for what i paid for it, i wouldn't expect it to be any more than it already was, which was a decent fixed blade knife.

I pretty much agree with you rustyrazor. I used it on a couple of hiking trips and despite the internet hate for it, it worked just fine for me. And I found the handle to be very comfortable. I have a video I did on the knife (very tongue-in-cheek, not to mention self-deprecating lol) but I won't post it if you want to keep the thread on track. Either way, up to you. Good review.

I bet even the crapiest knife out there will still perform fairly well as long as you stick to knife chores such as cutting, notching, making feather sticks, etc.. once you start trying to dismantle tanks with it, problems arise.

Sam, my man, feel free to post whatever you want on here. I was just trying to beat one up to see if it merited all the hate... and from what I can tell it's mostly just hate for hate sake. it's not the worlds best knife, but what do people expect right?

Mikel_24: I agree to a certain point... anything labelled "ultimate survival" anything should be able to live up to it's marketing, and that being said, all of the other knives I used in the tests that day came out the other side in a fair bit better condition than the gerber with the exception of the 1/16" thick mora which I wasn't about to try to stand on for obvious reasons... BUT, I did pay a lot more for most of those (or made two of them myself) so I was expecting they would fare better and hoped they would, but that's why I test things; to get real world data from my own two hands and eyes.

I agree. It didn't blow me away, but especially for the price and all that was included I found it to be a very serviceable knife. I didn't really find much negative about it.

OK, this video always makes me cringe a little, but it was fun to do and I don't mind laughing at myself. So here goes:

Yes, agreed. The "ultimate survival" tag on that knife is misleading. Someone could make the mistake of thinking it is going to be as tough as a Busse... And something tells me this person will get somewhat dissapointed. :D
