Gerber Big Rock opinions

I recently asked for information on KABAR and Ontario knives in the KABAR forum and got some great responses. As I said then, I am not set on buying anything right now, but interested in gathering data.

That brings me to the Gerber Big Rock. This knife seems to get mostly favorable reviews from those who own one and I was wondering what experience you have.

I realize the steel is different as is the price point between this Gerber entry and KABARs and Ontarios.

I would just like to know what you think of this knife, given its materials, construction and price point and not inecessarily in comparison to other higher priced knives of any brand.

Thanks in advance.

My mates had a few of them now ( keeps losing them ) and I was quite suprised when I checked them out, for the money they are quite a good, solid blade. They feel pretty good in the hand and have decent edge geometry !

Thanks for the response. This knife does seem to surprise many. I've not handled one but I wonder if the surprise is due to the quality of this knife or if it is influenced by the generally less than positive responses on most other current Gerber offerings?

Thanks again.

P.S. I always enjoy your posts and the pictures of your adventures.

I have a big rock and an lmfII and the big rock is by far more durable and more useful. It holds an edge decently, but go plain edge the serrations chipped out on mine.

I've only had a Big Rock for a few months but it is very comfortable in whatever position you hold it (reverse fencer for skinning deer in some areas, for example), good edge retention (not excellent), overall an outstanding knife for the price. My one criticism is in the sheath. Throw it away and get a good leather or Kydex made ASAP.
