does anybody have one of these? i've heard nothing but good things, so far.

i want to get one for a friend of mine. it's advertised as a "camp knife" that's not what i would be buying it for him to use as, though. it would be a concealed EDC for light utility and SD.

i notice the blade length and overall length is comparable to my Nimravus which is perfect (imo) for concealed carry. i just can't find any info on blade WIDTH. anybody know how wide it is? it looks beefier than my Nim, even tho length is the basically the same.

the other thing i would like to know, but can't seem to find, is: where is it made? America?

i'm trying to get out of buying him a fixed Griptilian, cheapskate that i am :-D

thanks.

funny you should mention the gerber big rock i just saw one at the px. i really anna know what people think about this blade.

I credit the Big Rock for robbing me of my savings account and pretty much a normal life over the past few months. In December of last year I thought $40 for a knife was up there but I needed a camp knife and the Big Rock was about the extent of MEC's fixed blades. I never buy anything without researching it, and land here at BF... then out of nowhere BAM!... Rittergrip... BOOM!... Tenacious... SPLAT!... 940 Osborne... WHAP!... Leek... ZING!... Ka-Bar Dozier... CRUNCH!... Sebenza... CRACK!... Paramilitary. And that's just Round 1. I plan on going the distance, up against badasses like Kirby Lambert, Greg Lightfoot, James McGowan, Mick Strider, and a slew of Sal Glesser's bruisers and Chris Reeve's workhorses.

I never did get around to that Big Rock.

Gerber has gotten very devious about not saying where their knives are made - probably because very, very few of them are made in America any more. As a general rule of thumb, if it doesn't say "USA" on the blade, it's made somewhere else (typically China). This knife doesn't say "USA," by the way.

yea, that's what i was wondering, thanx. i know alot of 'em are outsourcing their work, i've just never seen a big rock in person and didn't know if it was marked American.

i bought a Buck at WM and took it to the very next WM i ran into because i discovered it was Chinese. exchanged it for a $25 Kershaw from WM that WAS American. the Chinese thing isn't that big a deal, to me, but that knife was a gift for a family member in Asia, so it seemed kinda cheesy to bring a knife from America that was made in China LOL.

I went to mexico and brought back a knife for my son and it was made in china. It was made to look like it was made in mexico.

For the money I think it’s a very good knife. The steel isn’t the latest/greatest but it is easy to sharpen. The handle is very comfortable and the blade length is about right for me. I don’t like the sheath however.

It was my first knife. I bought it before knowing anything about knives, steel, anything. The sheath sucked terribly. At first I used the knife for light chores, and took it hiking with me once and cleared brush and such with it. It worked fine. Then I was cutting back some yucca plants on another hike, and the blade got horrible chipped, and that was the end of me using it for a long period of time. I eventually convexed the edge, and it turned into an ok beater. Then I lent it to a friend and he lost it and I don't really care. For what your friend wants to use it for, it sounds fine.
