So I picked up this mag light Gerber package on clearance awhile ago and it came with a Gerber us1. The blade was coated black and I noticed it came off on my fingers......no big deal it was a $6 package but I pulled out my centerdrive which I have yet to use and noticed the same thing on the black coated blade on that.

Is that a thing? I Kno gerber isnt that great but they haven't figured out coatings yet?

Never had this happen on any black coated Gerber's I've expereinced, and no I would say Gerber is not crap.
I've got a satin stumbled finish US1 and I find it and excellent lightweight American made knife for the money. Same goes for the ultralight LST.
A few years ago I gave my dad a Gerber Kiowa I had been gifted, and he beat the snow out of it at work.
The knife never got loose and always took an edge well when he needed me to sharpen it for him.
Maybe they're not the best and I wouldn't buy an imported gerber product ever.

Maybe they just had a bad batch of blade coating this time or something, I've never heard of this happening on any brand of knife really.

Yea I haven't heard it happening either. And the US1 isn't a bad little knife. I took the costing problem as a chance to practice hand mirror polishing a blade. Turned out ok but my issue is it coming off on a more expensive multitool.

Edited op as to not turn this into a Gerber bashing thread. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.

There must be a problem with their current batch of DLC or whatever coating, I'd call them.
Generally they seem to actually care about their Portland OR produced products, so they'll probably want to know there's a problem like this.

years ago got a new from authorized dealer chinese made Gerber torch hinderer design. black came off as you described. once I wore/wiped more of it off it was still black but faded a lot looked like years of use and carry fading but was brand new. didnt seem to be a big deal so I just used it as was. got it somewhere still but dont use it anymore.

That's exactly what happened with the US1 b4 I just sanded it. I haven't messed with the center drive after it started to come off.

Probably black oxide on the US1 and not done well apparently.

For their Chinese models I tend to think the coating more more likely some (probably highly toxic) paint.
