A buddy/fellow knife collector contacted me and asked me to find him a 1st Generation Gerber BMF that he could purchase, I know a good bit about the LMF series but have never heard of the BMF until I looked It up.

Does anyone on here have this knife?
Would you recommend It? Is It a good knife to actually USE? Any of you guys know what he Is looking at spending? Etc..

I am going to e-mail him and find out what his uses for It are going to be, but until I find that out please don't be like "Oh that knife Is horrible for blah blah blah reasons, he needs to get this (insert knife)" As far as I know he just wants one to have.

Thanks In advance for all who respond. :D

Its a large knife with a handle like a sponge. "440" series beadblasted steel, rugged Cordura sheath but a knife for the times (1980's). It had a cool factor back then but now . . . . . more a collector piece.

They demand a pretty good penny on the Bay, perhaps because of nostalgic reasons. I would say that would be your best bet for a like new one in box.

They were a popular military private purchase if that means anything to anybody.

imho, "hypalon" wasn't a particularly hardwearing material.

reckons...

feels just like an air conditioner's black foam insulation hose, btw.

the knife itself was actually pretty light weight, when compared to knives of comparable length.
what is there to dislike about the use of 440 stainless steel, other than the fact that it could have been made far worst with the likes of 420...
and whilst the saw teeth "added character" to the knife, i seriously think that anyone thinking of using a BMF would be better off with a non-sawtooth version and depend on the likes of a real saw to do the work.
besides it's bead blasted dull metal finish is prone to rusting if after care isn't put into practise.
but, it's generally agreed that it outperforms the buckmater and is a legendry Big Mo%#er F@%#r in it's own right.
