I hacked a few reeds with this old work horse. I googled this for the heck of it. A guy on ebay has one for sale for $200. I paid $50 or whatever the price for it was way back when. What do you guys recommend for an upgrade of this knife?

That knife never sold new for just $50 that I can remember. I think that the last catalog price I remember on it was in the $170 range, and that would have been in the 90's. The knife was made from 1986-1998.

Are you planning on selling it to finance another knife? They are semi-collectible now so you'd probably get a good penny for it, as long as it's in good condition.

I think the design is great, I wish they'd make them again in a carbon steel version.

As for upgrades, how much do you want to spend?

Busse, Fehrman, Mineral Mountain, Siegle ,and a lot of other custom makers too.

The $400 range gives you a lot of nice blades to choose from.

I think that I'd put something to paper and then talk to the custom makers on here about crafting it.

I have a used BMF. Well used. Hacked through the breast bone of well over 20 moose. It shows loads of love in its appearance. I never considered selling it though. However I did not know they were still worth a crap TBH. Now I know I have a collectible. we paid 275CAD for it back in 89. I would consider an offer though, especially a trade. But then there's those memories. The first time my dad thought it'd be a good idea to baton it through the sternum of a moose using the back of a hatchet. Nahhh I will never sell this thing. Its stays. Final answer. : )

Sorry for wandering :D

Edit: Thanks for starting this thread. it woke up my past this morning.

I have one...for what it is worth, I would not part with it. Upgrade is an interesting word, but if you just HAVE to get something new then I might suggest a Deregulator. Another astonishingly good knife is the CS trailmaster in San Mai, a bit tough on the wallet though. Fehrman is a great choice also as well as Busse but the BMF with a proper edge is one sweet blade in my book. You might get a kick out of getting a Basic 9 which, although hard to find, is one of my all-time fav. blades. I look for balance, comfort and the right heft in the mit. Have fun with your search, mind the addiction though...it is a VERY slick slope.
