Can anyone tell me what caused this..what's the fix..worth fixing?..just use it?bought it in a box of garage find stuff ... I've shown it side by side with my non sawtooth BMF for comparison...help!

I agree Bill Siegle Bill Siegle above

I’m no expert but it looks like it may have a threaded tang ? Does the Pommel cap unscrew ?

I believe the pommel is threaded on the tang. Not sure how to remove them however due to the rounded shape. You might try contacting Gerber too for advice on this issue.

Is the guard tight or loose? Those "teeth" sticking out from the tang between the guard and the blade don't look right. I can't imagine any reason why they would be there. I've never seen that on any other fixed-blade tang.

Just looking at the picture it looks like those teeth are a manufacturing defect, and they prevented the guard from going all the way up the tang and sitting flush with the blade. If that's the situation, I'm surprised it left the factory like that.

If the pommel came loose, it should be easy to tighten with a vice grips and heavy padding on the pommel.

Have you tried stabbing the tip gently into wood to see if the blade backs in and/or the pommel backs out?

I doubt the new Gerber ownership will be much help.

Def worth fixing. I'd do a custom handle on it in canvas or linen. Pretty sure the pommel is pinned on perhaps the pin sheared off, could be a screw on pommel but I never thought that was the case.
