I was wondering a few things about a Gerber BMF I found. It has an 8" blade instead of a 9". Is this rare? Also, the Silva compass that is with it is a clear rectangle instead of the black circle one. Unique? Or just run of the mill? I posted a thread earlier asking info about the BMF, and now have some specific questions. Thanks!

Hi,
Gerber made several versions of the BMF. The early models were 8", and the later models were 8.75". This is not to be confused with the LMF model, which is quite different.

If your arming yourself to place that knife on Egay, than may your balls burn in hell, while the rest of you treads water for ever....just kidding. The BMF is one of those old knives that people either hate or love, I happen to really like them, I own 2. I probubly like them so much, because it was the knife I wanted as a young knife nut, and couldn't afford. The short blade is from the earlier ones, the compass, I can't help you with, but I believe there were 2 different styles. Both mine are clear plastic, rectangular, with the rotating round degree dial, and Silva. The knife could be argued not that great, comparing it to some modern knives out there, but I think, for me, it is a great survival tool. the knife is strong, and comfortable. the sheath is stout and useful, and the thing just looks cool. I know, I know....saw teeth mean the knife sucks ( to some folks) but you know what, I give the knife a 2 big thumbs up. I hope you keep it, and if you want to get rid of it, don't just give it away, there are still a couple crazies like me out there that will give a pretty penny for a good one. Gene

I just had to add this. As a young lad, I wanted one specific version of the BMF in a MAJOR way! It was the "Predator" single-guard version that was a Cutlery Shoppe exclusive. Anyone own one of these? If so, was it as good as I used to imagine?

i dont know why people are paying 200.00+ for this & the buckmaster. i have both, got them when they were about 100.00 ;the bmf is a 440a bowie, nothing groundbreaking.handle is nice, saw teeth work, but for 200-250,i'd rather get a fallkniven bowie or a reeve fixed blade with hollow handle.........
