Gerber BMF steel?

I was wondering what kind of steel the old BMFs are made of? I thought it was 440a, but I've got a couple of old BMF that have little rust pits on them. Isn't 440a supposed to be one of the best when it comes to rust resistance?

I'm confused

Any steel will rust, if neglected. Those Gerbers are bead blasted, so that increases the places moisture can hide and cause problems. It should'nt be very deep, and should easily rub off though.

ah ha, that raises my next question, what do I rub with and how? is a rag okay to rub with? the guy at the local knife shop told me to use flitz.

Flitz on an old wool sock is my favorite method. Once corrosion gets to the point where that method won't work, some deeper work is needed. Usually, that means handrubbing or a change of finish to a satin belt finish. The only way you can stay with the bead blasted finish, is to have the knife reblasted.

This is one of the reasons that I don't care for a beadblasted finish. :grumpy:
