K killgar I think you were remembering this thread.
I got a lucky break on two acquisitions. I found a Gerber BMF, in the box, including all the little foldouts that came with it, the compass and the whole shebang. I also obtained an LMF, but just knife and sheath.
Now, on the BMF based on my memory- a lot of reports claim the BMF premiered in ‘86, and I’m confident this is not true.
I obtained my first when I was in high school, and I graduated in 1984. I wanted it bad so I mowed lawns and whatever to attain it. The point is, I know for a fact it came out in ‘83 or ‘84.
My original was stolen (along with a Buck 184) so I had been...

Yes, sorry. I meant to hit the f not the g. The serial number is very low it’s in the few first thousands made. I did do some research and you’re right.I believe you meant "Gerber BMF", since the knife says "BMF".
When seeking the age of a Gerber BMF it may help a lot to provide pics of any blade markings (both sides) as well as pics of the sheath (both sides), and an accurate measurement of the length of the blade. Gerber made several variants of the BMF over several years, different blade lengths, different sheaths, etc. But even with such pics and info it may be difficult to narrow it down.
Generally speaking, it's my understanding that the BMF was produced from the mid 1980's to the late 1990's. Although there is evidence to suggest that the BMF was first available around 1985-86, I have seen several people, including on this forum, who swear that they bought or received one in 1984, with detailed memories of the occasion.
I fixed the title.Yes, sorry. I meant to hit the f not the g. The serial number is very low it’s in the few first thousands made. I did do some research and you’re right.
Wow, so I got a little gym off of a familly member lol. Glad I gave him under 200 for it lol. He is definitely not getting it back. Sorry for the shadow on the BMF part of the blade. I did not take a good picture. The knife is in mint condition never sharpened or carried. The Gerber BMF was introduced in 1986. Your knife was made in the first two years of the BMF production. The blade went through 3 different minor shape changes with your knife having the first blade shape. You could get it with chisel teeth and without, and in 2 lengths (8 inch blade at first and then ending with a 9 inch blade). Production ended in 1997. The Cutlery Shoppe had their own version called the Predator. It did not have the chisel teeth and did not have the top portion of the guard. It also came with a different sheath with no compass.
Thanks for the info. I sincerely appreciate that.View attachment 2799937
This is the flyer Gerber provided with the 1986 catalog folder. It was not on the 10-1-1985 price guide sheet that had all the added Bench Mark knives.
Thats and early BMF. the first blade version. Congrats to a great find! Can anyone tell me when this Gerber BMF was made ?
Thank you so much. I stole it from a friend that knew one of my family members. He sold it to me for 175. I’m holding on to it for a little while, until I find something better, that I want or need.Thats and early BMF. the first blade version. Congrats to a great find!
