Anyone have any experience with the Gerber Bowie? Smoky Mountain Knife Works has them on sale for $69.99 which looks like a great price. It looks like they are being discontinued. (I do not work for Smoky Mountain but I do give them my money... :) )

I was looking at a Cold Steel Trailmaster but this price was too good to pass up. How would you compare the two? I know that the Trailmaster has better steel.

I've owned and used both and I would have to say that I like the Gerber best, mostly due to the handle shape on the Gerber. I use the Gerber as my "beater" knife and I'm toying with the idea of removing the rubber handle and replacing it with a stag handle. My 2 cents worth.

I have the Gerber bowie and if you can get it for the price you posted jump on it. SMKW has this habit of advertising things that they don't have when you call.

I modified my bowie a bit. I put a sharpen false edge on mine for backcuts and I dremeled the sharp guard and sanded it down very smooth. On the false edge I used progressively higher grit wet/dry sandpaper and the false edge's shiny appearance contrasts well against the bead blast finish.

I like this knife and paid a lotttttt more than you did. It is definitely worth $70!

Tell us if you get it.

Definately go for it, I paid $90 for mine. They have been discontinued for a while from what I understand but a good supply has been floating around for a bit. My only complaint at first was the sheath but after a few carrys it grew on me.

Just called SMKW. Second time in a row I've called on an item that was on sale and found it to be sold out. They should limit #'s per person on these things. You'll probably find them on tables at gun shows around the country for $100 now. Oh well, at least I had the satisfaction of not ordering a couple of other things I planned on picking up with the Gerber bowie.

I hate saying it, but I told you so......has happened to me more than a few times from our friends at SMKW

I was able to lock in on one but it was touch and go for a while because they were having problems processing credit cards over the phone and via internet.

I will give you an update when I receive it.

Are there any tricks to sharpening the false edge besides just spending hours with a stone? I don't have a belt sander so that is out of the question....

Thanks for the info. so far!

I spent a few hours hand sharpening the false edge. I used a DMT sharpener and got the edge fairly decent. I scratched the hell out of the swedge so that is why I put a satin finish on it. It looks just fine. It's a fun and doable project.
