My wife's Nephew, was a member of the 249th Engineering Battalion, assigned to the 10th Mountain Division in Afghanistan. Upon arrival in country, he was issued some in theater items. One of these was a GERBER COMBAT FOLDER, with a satin finished blade. I looked it over, and could not find a military numbers or markings. I believe it was a Off The Shelve Item. This is posted as for information to others.

A good friend of mine carries one of these also...given to him by his son who served in the Sandland. It is a big moose of a knife, standard-issue press-button auto...much larger than my Umnumzaan, and has a half-serrated blade in S30V (stamped on blade).

Army units buy all kinds of commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) items from pens and paper to knives and watches to tools and test equipment to nearly any other expendable and durable supplies. A soldier is upposed to leave most issued durable items (including knives) with the unit when he leaves the unit or the Army when he leaves the Army. The Army is very specific about what a soldier keeps when transitioning from one unit to another and when leaving the service. Otherwise he's just stealing from the taxpayers.
