Well, I decided I should post up some thoughts on the somewhat new Gerber Commuter. I just picked this up locally, so this is just an initial review/ first impressions and I hope to follow up after some use.

I have to preface this with the fact that I, like most people it seems, have all but given up on Gerber. I feel like at one time they were a great company that made quality products, but somewhere, for some reason, they lost their way.

With that out of the way, this model, the Gerber Commuter, looks like they could be heading in the right direction. It is a lightweight lockback, that locks up solid, with no play. The blade is slightly off center but nothing to be concerned about. The blade is shaving sharp, though there is a somewhat concerning "ding" in the edge that I am not sure of the source of (this could have happened after the manufacturer at some other point, especially since I bought this from a retailer that is not very concerned about mishandling products). The blade is made out of 420HC, which I think works well in a budget blade. The ergonomics seem very good, with my medium sized hand, and there is plenty of grip. There is also a half stop, which was a nice surprise!

For less than $25, this knife is made in the US, and of quality materials. I hope to give it some average use, mainly kitchen duty and everyday cutting chores, and report back. I encourage anyone else to chime in if they have any experience with this knife, as there is not a lot of user info out there.

As a side note- After handling this knife, I will definitely be picking up its little brother, the US1, to try out.

These are the stock photos. I will be taking some, "out in the wild" pics soon, and will post em here later.

No problem with chicken salad prep!

I'd been curious about that knife. Let us know how well it holds up and holds an edge. I'm curious as to how Gerber's 420hc compares to Buck's.
