Gerber Covert FAST Questions...

Just recently bought the Gerber Covert from Cabelas and I loved the design. Once I started reading about the knife, I started to become really skeptical. I found out that Gerber used 440A steel on this knife, and the mechanism that locks the blade open is this flimsy little 1x2mm piece of metal that drops into a hole at the base of the blade.

I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with Gerber's mysterious 440A steel, and if anyone has ever had a problem with the flimsy little lock that Gerber uses for their FAST knives?

There are much better knives for the price. It is no secret that Gerber uses some prety bad steel in some of their folders. I cannot speak to the knife itself, but it would not be a far reach to imagine that if the steel is bad, the rest of the knife follows suit.

+1
They're not the best choice, Gerber's folders = constant letdown (in my experience)

Yeah, they non USA made Gerbers aren't very good, certainly not at Cabala's typically msrp prices. The Benchmade 530 is somewhat similarly designed but with a much better build.

another more secure locking false edge spear point folder would be the cold steel counter point II

I did the same buy for my nephew for Christmas b/c that's what he's into...I was soooo disapointed with it. I think he was too after he checked out a couple of my kershaws and spydercos...
