Gerber Covert Folder Applegate Fairbairn. I know Gerber makes a lot of crap, but you have to agree the Covert Folder is a quality knife right? I mean its one of the few USA Made Gerbers, its 154CM and seems to have a good forge. I love my covert folder, and will put it up against a lot of folders. Especially the CRKTs that everyone in the Army is buying.

oh, they're all good;
until that is... you find someone trying to take on something it wasn't entirely built to handle.
gerber coverts are not your everyday gerbers, rather specialized i admit.
definately can't fault them for what they are...especially if you know exactly where it's coming from in purpose and design.
stay safe.

And SOG's? They're amazing folders in my opinion...

Well I have owned SOG's and love their durability, but I am just as happy with the Covert Folder as a SOG for durability. I also like the feel and look of the covert folder over most SOG's. Now I defiantly feel SOG to be a better overall brand then Gerber. I just find the Covert Folder to be the Cadillac of the Gerbers. I feel the my covert is like a Gerber Gator that is thumb open.

My three picks for Gerbers would be

Covert Folder - Use a lot and love.

LMF Infantry Knife - Own but haven't tested.

Gerber Gator - Don't own, but will.

I don't agree.

It's a stabber. That's what it's designed for. All its designed for. So it has limited functionality.

And as a dedicated stabber, who cares what steel it is? You could stab with 420J2 or AUS-4 at a fraction of the cost.

So no....functionality vs. price....not good at all in my book.

While I'm not a big Gerber fan for the most part, I've got a friend that has carried the full size and mini Gerber AF's for over 10 years in the military, from Chile, Bosnia and a total of 3 years in Iraq, and they have never failed to do what he needed. After his last tour in Iraq his enlistment was up, and he gave my the mini-covert one, and it's a solid knife.

I've got an old Gerber 4.5" bladed Appegate/Fairbairn folder that I still think is a great looking knife. My only quibble is that is doesn't come with a clip and , according to Gerber, it was constructed in such a manner that a clip could not be securely attached. I guess back then , way before Espadas and Rajahs, they thought a folder that big required a pouch.

I had a Covert awhile back - carried it daily for over a year. By the end of that time, the liner lock was so worn that it was going completely over to the far side, with the leading edge of the liner lock past the far edge of the blade.

I tossed it.

It may be a fighting knife, but its not a dedicated stabber. There is more to knife fighting than stabbing. I find it very comfortable for utility needs. It has always cut anything I asked, and never slowed down. Gerber may not be what they used to be, but even a blind squirrel finds a nut every once in a while. This is a great knife, at a fair price. I paid about $90 for it. Compare that to Benchmade its in the fair ballpark.

exactly!
and let's not discount what some purpose-built pointed plastic thingies are capable of.
