hey guys! this is my first post on this forum. after doing a lot of searching i have decided to get a gerber covert. my questions are...
1. for a general utility pourpose is the false edge or single edge better. is there a diference?
2. how decent is the black coating?
3.if i get the false edge is there a decent place to put your thumb?
thanx for your help everybody

1. For utility get the single edge. easier to sharpen.

2. Not sure, never had with it.

3. With the false edge, there is about an inch or so of area that is left the full width of the blade for a finger rest.

delicrazy,

mshwoeb accurately answered your questions but just to clarify that the false edge is not sharp (obviously). It's up to you to sharpen it if you want a double edged dagger.

If you choose to sharpen it, the good thing is that unlike other false edged knives the entire blade - except the thumbstud - is safely tucked into the handle in the closed position. Therefore, regardless, the answer to your third question is "Yes".

If you want a general purpose knife, I'd go for the single edge.

I have the false edge only because I wanted it to be as faithful to the Applegate/Fairbairn knife concept as possible.

The single edge is a better utility blade, but this knife design just begs for the false edge. The single edge ruins the symmetry of the knife in my opinion.

It's excellent as far as coatings go. It will still show scratches and whatnot much more than an uncoated blade, though.

Sure, no problems there...

The false edge is the way to go, IMHO. It was the way the knife was originally designed. The Rex Applegate design is a knife legend.
