Gerber EAB Recall !!!!!!!!!!

I had the blade come loose on mine when the screw loosened, didn't cut myself but was rather unhappy with the event.

This is a copy of the email response I got:

Thank you for contacting Gerber Legendary Blades. The EAB Knife (Model
nos. 22-41548, 22-41548CDIP, 22-01548W and 22-41548W) are presently
being recalled.
Gerber is recalling the EAB Knife because the blade can become free
during strenuous use thereby posing laceration hazards to the user.

Please note that the EAB Knife has been redesigned to offer more secure
safety features but will appear very similar to the original product
offering the same functionality.

Should your knife have a manufacture defect, please allow Gerber to
provide you a pre-paid envelope for your product and offer you this new
replacement.

Please provide your name, address and phone information and a pre-paid
envelope will be sent to your attention to attain this product. You
need only place your EAB Knife in the package that is sent to you, close
it securely and drop in a local mail box. Upon receipt, a new
redesigned EAB Knife will be sent to you within a few weeks.

Gerber Legendary Blades appreciates your cooperation in this recall and
apologizes for any inconvenience. To see more details regarding this
recall, please feel free to go to our website at www.gerbergear.com and
click on the "EAB Knife Safety Recall" tab.

So far all I see is to phone in, like it or not.

Why not a internet page where you can request the same and fill in the address blocks without spending time on the phone?

It all has to be transcribed back into the system, and each step offers another layer of error. Processing thousands of requests ain't cheap when you have to hire temp help to sort it all out.

Looks like I'll leave mine in the glove box until I get a round tuit. Maybe that's what they're hoping for?

Not the kind of customer service Gerber used to have - just like the knives, it keeps getting worse.

Thanks, Fiskars.

i just bought one of these this week from sportsmans guide, it should be a redesigned piece right? i intend to use it as a money clip

tirod3 find some more to complain about why don't you?

Personally I think it is amazing they are even providing prepaid evenlopes in addition to replacing the product in the first place.

Glad they at least issued a recall , I have no tolerance towards laceration.

I won one of these on EDC Forums in a drawing. I found out about it shortly after winning and checked mine. I have one of the newer versions.

i just got mine today and from my understanding if the knife has a screw head that can be turned with a coin to secure the blade then it is the new production blades the recalled blades utilized a phillips head.

seems like a pretty decent little piece for $9 shipped it will serve me well as a cheepie money clip/backup EDC piece.

I couldn't resist the price when I was at walmart today, and I must say it is fantastic for the money.

If "fantastic for the money" means shoddy junk with blade slippage, then WOOHOO, buy ten! One for each (missing!) finger! Even cheap knives sold out of a bucket at gas stations fit the bill better than this. The old Stanley cutting tool managed to do the job without collapsing on the fingers, and for far FAR less that this "bargain" price I might add.

Ugh, I had a low opinion of Gerber to begin with but every time I think they've hit bottom they drain a bit more out of the pool.

I'm really glad I never went over to Wally World and bought a couple of these, and one to give to my Dad for work.

Imagine the guilt trip there.

I think I'll stick with the folding Husky superknife knockoffs I beat the heck out of at work until I get around to buying a genuine Superknife or two.

Gee....what a surprise. Gerber gets bought out by Fiskars and they have a recall on a gerber knife. What was once a fine knife company has become 1 step up from Paki knives.

Bill

I bought one of these for my Dad, I will let him know about the recall.

As for all of you slamming mud all over the company why didn't you buy Gerber when it was for sale and run it to meet your satisfaction? I own older Gerber products and a couple newer ones, if I see a new Gerber that catches my eye I will probably buy it as well. No company is perfect and I have seen even custom knives fail. Gerber is doing the right thing by issuing the recall rather than letting folks get hurt. Cut them some slack and respect them for doing what is right.
