Gerber Eclipse multitool. It's not good.

:( When I first saw it, I was really happy. I really like the shape, and it's blue color, at first appearance it looks like a tough contender for the Leather Micra or SOG crosscut. It isn't.
Size: It is just a hair over 2 inches long when folded, and 1 3/8" across. It is about as thick as a thin folder, so don't expect it to be bulky, because it's not. I kept forgetting which pocket it was in.
The tools:

I'll let the pics do the talking, but I will add that the knife is a bit more of a wharnecliff than a leaf as shown in the picture. Also, on either side, both tools have the same axle going through the pivot hole, so the adjacent tool may come out slightly. This may be a problem if you aren't paying attention, and the knife blade pops out. For some reason, this doesn't with my knife blade (although it does with the other 3 tools, so I expect it will soon, after a bit more use, if I continue to carry it). All of the tools are as useful as to be expected, but the phillips should be a bit bigger, and even though it is small, it still doesn't fit eyeglass screws, which makes it nearly useless.
The scissors/folding action:
The folding action is terrible. terrible. terrible. It is my opinion that you should buy something else, just because the aluminum handles scrape BADLY when you try to open the scissors. It only happens on one side of mine, but it scrapes so bad, the blue has worn off, and it makes that awful scraping sound of aluminum against steel. The scissors are actually pretty good, but so are the scissors of other brands. To close the thing up again you have to awkwardly and tightly pinch the scissors close in order to turn the handle into the folding position, as it scrapes along the back side of the scissors with that awful scraping sound. And that keychain hole really blows also, since every time that you unfold the tool to get your scissors, the holes splits open, and there goes your keys.
Man, I'm really disappointed, I thought this would be a cool little gadget, but the design flaws really make me think it ought to go back to the drawing board.
I also think it would be more helpful if it was a bit larger, but that is the least of my complaints.
Please ask lots of questions and feel free to email me I'm a bit new at writing reviews, so please post whatever you feel. If you really want my eclipse to play with, please email me and we'll work something out, because I'm ready to get rid of it.

I saw one of these new little Gerbers as well and was not impressed. The Leatherman Squirt is the one you want to get if you're looking for a good keychain gadget that you can use.

I wish they hadn't done that:rolleyes: I've bought three or four Gerber pieces over the last few years and I can't say it's top of the line but it certainly isn't junk either. The Gerber Legend, for example, could be "The Tool" for someone looking to do allot of wire cutting.

Anyway,looking at what a decent multi-tool usually sells for,it's no wonder at $20.00 that it's a P.O.S..I just wish their name wasn't on it:mad:

I'm not buying anything from Gerber any more. Back in the 80s I had a great Gerber lockback (sadly, the movers stole it). So, based on that good experience I bought one of their multi-tools in the early 90s, I think it was called the multi-plier or something.

Absolutely awful. It was wobbly, the wire cutters would just bend the wire because the jaws didn't meet right. The phillips head stripped like it was made of lead or something. The knife blade was a blank. I mean, it had no edge on it whatsoever. Shipping it back wasn't an option because I was on a 4 month deployment at the time. Later I got my Leatherman and never took the Gerber out again.

The sad part is that it would have been a lot better, had a few tiny changes been made.
Doesn't anyone want to actually carry and use the thing a bit before it goes into production?

I don't know, I don't go in much for mini-tools anyhow,...but they use the word Multi-tool which bothers me for some reason.

bought *1* gerber, and won't be buying a 2nd. Gerber gator, sharpened and oiled to where I liked it, took it out to the bush, and the pivot gave out. Not what I expected from a knife I dropped 60cdn on. Whittling, and I just felt it give... Wouldn't close or anything after, so it found it's way into deep bush by way of an overhand throw.
not worth hauling back in to ship for warrenty.

Have not used the Eclipse, but have used a Gator, which is now owned by a friend. It has seen years of use, the blade is worn back from sharpening. Lock is still strong. Your was probably a defect, it happens with any company.

Regarding the Eclipse, you might want to try and contact Gerber and see if the scraping is to be expected.

I bought a Multi-Plier years ago when they were still kinda new and all it did was pich my hand, the blades closed on me, the whole deal was wobbly and loose and it rusted up solid on me just sitting in it's sheath.

Over the years my father has bought every multi tool that is made and uses them every day down in Florida. He subjects them to real use, outside, in the water, exposed to heat, sweat, solvents, and he cuts lots of wire. Consistantly the Gerbers have failed him in one way or another. He can't find one tool to do it all, so he rotates through them all. He just bought the newest Gerber tool that doesn't fold up, and he hates it with a passion. He'd give anything to get his money back, but he lost the receipt.

The only one that's really held up for him has been a Leatherman Supertool, and a Leatherman Wave. Both of those tools have shortcomings as well, but I guess you can't have everything.

P.S. I also had a Gerber LS2 I think it was, the BIG folding knife with Zytel handle. I used it to whittle and stuff all the time, and my lock quit too, while I was using it. Gave myself a nice gash.

This is alittle off-topic (sorry), but not ALL Gerber products are junk...I have a pair of Gerber Yari fixed-blade knives, and they are an EXCELLENT knife!...154CM steel, with a full tang, and canvas Micarta handle...The fit, grinds, and finish on both are top-notch.

As far as multi-tools go, I stick with SOG.

Well, I haven't tried the item in question, but I've carried their multi-plier for years... and other than the tip of one of the tools snapping off as I was... PRYING (OH NO! ) I've preferred it to the Leatherman I used to carry... Yes, there's rust on some of the interior screw wells, but that's mostly my fault for not taking care of it... But, I also got it 'cause using the Leatherman on anything that required twisting or really gripping hard resulted in almost cutting one's fingers due to the exposed edges of the tool recess in the handles... The Gerber has a more rounded, user-friendly handle design. Yup, one can pinch oneself if they're not too careful, but that'll happen on a lot of limited purpose tools, too.
I also love Gerber's Customer Service - I bought my father a pocketknife years ago that finally started to see the pivot pin wear out - they fixed it for free and even returned it in a new slipcase... for free...
I won't say they have the best multi-tools... but I have been happy with the one I have...

Too bad you had such a bad experience with it. Perhaps quality control is not that great at Gerber or something. All I can comment on is my own personal experience with Gerber, and so far it has been great!

I have bought 3 of their Multipliers so far (Hate loosing things!) and all 3 have be superb. Easily just as good as my Leatherman, and much more handy with the one handed opening. The ruler gradations should be on the outside of the handle though. Blades were sharp right out of the box (as they should be). I have used my current Multiplier for EDC for the past 6 years, and other than dirt and dust on it, it functions great.

Other Gerber knives I have bought also work quite well. Like I said before, I cannot comment on their quality control, nor your specific purchase, but so far Gerber has worked well for me.

For the most part, Gerbers haven't excited me, but I do have one that I really like: the old LMF. Actually, it's a brand new old LMF, because not long after I got it, I discovered custom knives and never used it, but it's a neat looking, well executed, rock solid knife, and has probably the most comfortable handle I've ever felt on a production fixed blade.
